Text: Muscolino JE, Kinesiology: The skeletal system and muscle function. Muscolino
JE, Musculoskeletal Anatomy Flashcards
Course Description: This course is meant to apply your knowledge of human anatomy
from a biomechanical perspective. You will be able to observe and analyze select human
movements for function and potential pathology.
Course Objectives:
 You will be able to observe and describe in literal terms body movement.
 You will be able to identify muscle origins and insertions and their actions.
 You will demonstrate an understanding of the different bones of the body and
how they move.
 You will demonstrate a working knowledge of the neural contributors to a variety
of muscles.
 You will be able to assess different modes of contraction and how they are
contributing to selected movements.
 You will learn how to use a goniometer to evaluate range of motion.
 You will learn different manual muscle testing techniques and how to grade
strength.
 You will learn basic neuromuscular control concepts associated with motor
learning as it relates to human development, performance, and injury.
Grading:
Quizzes: 120 points (8 quizzes @ 15 points)
These are meant to reinforce the materials we have recently discussed. They may
be in essay, multiple choice, or short answer format, or some combination of these
three.
Exams: 120 points (2 exams @ 60 points)
They may be in essay, multiple choice, or short answer format, or some
combination of these three.
In-class Activities: 10 points per activity
These will include shooting video, viewing video, and discussion.
Two Projects: 100 points per project (50 points for the write-up; 50 points for the
presentation)
You will do an upper extremity project and a lower extremity project. The
parameters of these projects will be defined at least two weeks prior to the first
project.
Attendance:
The college’s class attendance policy will be adhered to as I interpret it. Absences
because of College sponsored activities should be addressed with me in advance so
alternative arrangements can be made. Three unplanned absences will result in a report
to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
