MATTERS ARISING FROM PREVIOUS MINUTES Amended Grading Scheme Lie on the Table Lie on Table. Item is currently being investigated through the Deans Advisory Committee. A report from the Deans Advisory Committee will be presented at the next Computing Discipline Committee in November 2007. 4. CDC07/052 REPORT FROM THE PRESIDING OFFICER The Faculty of Business Computing Discipline Committee agreed to receive the following written report from the Presiding Officer. 1. Australian Computer Society The re-accreditation of our computing courses occurred on Wednesday 15 August and a verbal report will be given at this meeting regards the recommendations that were made. In total, nine of our courses were up for re-accreditation. I would like to thank everyone involved with putting together the documentation and the support materials for this day. In particular, I would like to pass on a special thanks to the course coordinators: Michael Antolovich, Oliver Burmeister, Tony Dean, Geoff Fellows, Martin Hale, Jason Howarth, and Kevin Wilkins. Also I would like to thank the administrative support staff on each campus for help compile the documents requested by the ACS. This was a joint effort and I very much appreciate the contributions everyone made. 2. Change in Course Coordination roles The Heads of School are in the process of approving new course coordinators for our computing courses. There will be some rationalisation of the people performing course coordination duties to allow academic staff to be more involved in their teaching and research activities. The people to be appointed will be advised in due course. 3. Mid year intake Overall we have had about 15 new students starting into the Bachelor of Information Technology course in 200770. This is a healthy number of students to commence into the course and it is important that we provide these students with the support that they require for their studies at CSU. 7 4. Change in policies As you would be aware there have been a number of policy changes implemented by the Dean’s Advisory Committee (DAC) that directly affect the computing discipline. Please refer to the agenda for this meeting for details of these changes however it is important to note that these changes will not be implemented in the computing discipline until 200819. This means that, besides other changes, the awarding of AA/AE grades in computing and mathematics subjects is still possible for the remainder 2007. 5. Membership of the Dean’s Advisory Committee (DAC) The new membership of the DAC is included in the agenda of this agenda. The main change is that the representation of people from the computing and mathematics discipline has been reduced with John Messing, Ken Lodge and John Louis no longer on this committee. The new role of the DAC is meant to be more strategic in nature while committees such as the Computing Discipline Committee and the Mathematics Discipline Committee are expected to perform at a more operational level. My role on the DAC will be to represent both the computing and mathematics discipline groups. Additional Verbal Report: The Presiding Officer reported that the Australian Computer Society has awarded re-accreditation of ACS accreditation the Bachelor of Information Technology and the Master of Information Technology. In addition they have awarded accreditation of the Bachelor of Computer Science, the Bachelor of Computer Science (Games) and the Bachelor of Computer Science (Games) (Honours). The ACS has requested additional information before they give accreditation for the Industry Masters programs. 4.1 Report from Albury Discipline Committee There are no items to be received from the Albury Discipline Committee 4.2 Report from Wagga Discipline Committee There are no items to be received from the Wagga Discipline Committee 4.3 Report from Bathurst Discipline Committee There are no items to be received from the Bathurst Discipline Committee. 8 4.4 CDC07/053 Report from Sub Dean International Information Technology The Faculty of Business Computing Discipline Committee agreed to receive the following verbal report from the Sub Dean International Information Technology. PROPOSED NEW SUBJECT PROFILE FOR ITIL There was in principle agreement with the introduction of a new ITIL subject however the greatest concern for the implementation of such a subject is what subject is going to be deleted to enable this subject to be implemented. The subject will now be entered into CASIMS for the November meeting of the CDC. 4. PASS / FAIL REQUIREMENTS: ARE THERE ANY IMPLICATIONS FROM THE NEW FACULTY POLICY? Noted 6. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Computing Discipline Committee will be held on Friday 2 November 2007, 1pm- 3pm, via videoconference. CLOSURE There being no further business the meeting closed at 2.58pm 13 PRESIDING OFFICER’S REPORT This has been a very busy year for the Computing Discipline Committee with the re-accreditation of our courses with the Australian Computer Society (ACS). Overall the result of this exercise can be seen to be a positive experience in that it makes us reflect on the content and structure of our courses. It also has the advantage that ACS accreditation of our courses is seen as a marketable item to many students. The one area where we were requested by the ACS to make modifications was with regards to our industry masters programs. A report was sent off to the ACS addressing the concerns raised however we still have not received official notification from the ACS about the overall re-accreditation process carried out at CSU. Once this information is received the details will be sent off to CDC. Another major event currently being organised is the 2008 Colloquium. This event will be held in Wagga from the 5 – 7 February 2008 and a small subcommittee will present recommendations to this committee for consideration. The colloquium is an opportunity for computing and mathematics staff to get together to discuss topical issues with a proposed theme of “Building a Viable Future: Computing and Maths disciplines” and it is expected that all academic and administration staff will attend this event from the computing and mathematics discipline. One of the aims of this colloquium is to generate measurable outcomes that can further followed through on. There will be a number of key academic staff leaving Charles Sturt University at the end of 2007 and, who at this time, will not be replaced. This will place significant strains on the discipline to be able to successful delivery its academic programs next year. This will require the schools and the discipline to critically evaluate the viability of its current courses / programs and to evaluate the alternatives. In particular whether the delivery of three internal and one DE BIT program, that offers six majors, is still a viable option. Having said that there are other opportunities that have the potential to boost student numbers including consideration of a linkage between CSU and EMC. It is these types of initiatives where we need to ‘step-outside-the-square’ and be proactive to ensure the future viability of the computing discipline. As this is the last meeting for 2008 I would like to thank al the CDC committee members for their contributions to the computing discipline in 2007. I would also like to thank the Faculty office for providing administration support during 2007. 14 5. PROFICIENCY CREDITS & KEY SUBJECTS Please find below a summary of the discussions that took place over the past week with regards to PCRs and Key Subjects. I have provided two motions to the Faculty Board on these issues. If I have misinterpreted the mood of your responses please get back to me as soon as possible however your school representatives will still be able to discuss the issues further at the next Faculty Board meeting. BACKGROUND 1. Proficiency Credits The current wording before the DAC is DAC07/44 Credits be as follows: Faculty of Business policy on granting Proficiency - That Proficiency Credit not be granted in the Faculty of Business undergraduate courses; That Proficiency Credit not be granted in the Faculty of Business Postgraduate/Graduate courses; and That under special circumstances Proficiency Credit will be considered for Level 1 and Level 2 subjects in the Information Technology Discipline. In such cases, to be awarded a proficiency credit in a subject which has a final examination, a student shall be required to sit for an examination (which shall normally be the final examination for that subject) set by the Subject Co-ordinator and to be arranged in accordance with Proficiency Credit regulation 4. - - 2. Key subjects Key subjects is another area that needs to be urgently resolved before our next CDC meeting. Again as you may be aware the DAC is requesting discussion with the course coordinators and within the discipline groups on key subjects. DAC 07/21 (ii) that Course Coordinators who wish to implement key subjects in a course should identify subjects that could be used as key subjects, have discussions with Discipline Groups and forward recommendations to Faculty Board. RESPONSES The summary of responses on PCR: 1. The third option (including all of the red words) - i.e. allow a PCR to any student who can pass a final exam, but not for Level 3 subjects; 15 2. a student shall be required to pass at least at the Credit level, an examination... 3. I am happy with the general sense of the specified requirements for, and the continuation of, PC. 4. a student shall be required to pass at least at the Credit level, an examination... 5. Allow for proficiency credits for UG courses, and the rare occasion that they may be granted. I don’t see a place for proficiency credits in PG courses. 6. a student shall be required to pass at least at the Credit level, an examination... 7. in favour of PCR for first year maths subjects if the applicant can provide sufficient evidence to support their application. 8. Allow for proficiency credits where the student is required to pass the examination. The summary of responses on Key Subjects: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Have none for the BInfoTech; I believe that any student who cannot pass ITC161, ITC106 and ITC114 within 2 genuine attempts has no place in the BIT and we are not doing them a service by not excluding such students from the course I would retain Key Subjects in BInfoTech No key subjects in the MIT Only four students have been penalised for the double fail of key subjects in the BIT, I would therefore recommend that to not have key subjects in the computing discipline which is inline with the rest of the Faculty of Business No key subjects exist in maths courses School of Computing and Mathematics votes 13:1 in favour of key subjects MOTIONS Based on the feedback provided the following two motions will be sent to the next Faculty Board meeting for consideration 1. Proficiency credits That under special circumstances Proficiency Credit will be considered for Level 1 and Level 2 subjects in the Information Technology Discipline and in the Mathematics Discipline . In such cases, to be awarded a proficiency credit in a subject which has a final examination, a student shall be required to sit for an examination set by the Subject Convener (which shall normally be the final examination for that subject), and pass this examination to a credit level standard as arranged in accordance with Proficiency Credit regulation 4. 2. Key subjects No key subjects will be implemented in the computing and mathematics discipline within the Faculty of Business. Kind Regards John Atkinson Sub-Dean Computing Senior Lecturer in Information Technology School of Business and Information Technology 16 Charles Sturt University 17 COURSE COORDINATORS – 2008 Course coordinators play a critical role with regards to our computing courses.
