Call to Order A. Meeting called to order at 3:39 p.m. by Chair Kami Silk (meeting commenced after an announcement by Brad Mello, which is explained in announcements section). B. The minutes of the 2010 meeting were approved unanimously. II. Nominations and Elections A. Sign up for paper reviewers was circulated with a slate being created, and approved. B. Ballots for elections for Vice Chair Elect & Graduate Student Representative were distributed. Additional nominations were made from the floor. C. All candidates were allowed to introduce themselves. The election results were as follows. 1. Vice Chair Elect: Jake Jenson (University of Utah) 2. Graduate Student Representative: Emily A. Raunchier (University of MissouriColumbia) III. Office Reports A. Chair Report: Kami Silk 1. Legislative Assembly Report a. Discussed NCA's "Smart" website and its features. b. Explained task force for how we represent NCA, and task force for public policy. c. Issue about Spectra and job ads needing to address whether sponsoring institution has domestic partner benefits was discussed then tabled until the 2012 legislative meeting. d. Dues for NCA will increase in the upcoming year(s). e. NCA is considering convention site location at convention center(s). f. Debate occurred about who has the power to censor the offensive language in submission titles (program planner or paper/panel writer). Decision made that paper/panel writer has a responsibility to ensure that submission(s) are not obscene. g. National Science Foundation used a NCA White Paper regarding the role of research in society. The NSF report used information regarding communication research to advocate for greater funding for research endeavors. B. Vice Chair Report: Nichole Egbert 1. Two hundred papers submitted with a 58% acceptance rate and 10 panels submitted and one panel accepted. 2. Currently our division has 955 members. C. Vice Chair Elect Report: Lance Rintamaki 1. Conference Theme for 2012: Celebrate COMMunity 2. Conference location for 2012: Orlando from 11/15 – 11/18, 2012 at Swan & Dolphin Hotel 3. Conference submissions open up in January 2012 and the deadline is at the end of March 2012. IV. Award Presentations A. Thesis and Dissertation awards 1. Monique Turner noted that the Amanda L. Kundrat Health Communication Thesis of the Year award was awarded at ICA this year to Mindawati Wijaya (degree conferred by Nanyang Technological University). Title: Influencing Children's Food Consumption: Impact of Message Framing and Tailoring on Efficacy and Intention Co-Advisors: Theng Yin Leng, Nanyang Technological University and May O. Lwin, Nanyang Technological University 2. Then she presented the Dissertation of the Year award, sponsored by Peter Lang Publishing to Elizabeth Gardner, Texas Tech University (degree conferred by University of Missouri). Title: The Role of Narrative and Other-Referencing in Attenuating Psychological Reactance to Diabetes Self-Care Messages Advisor: Glenn Leshner, University of Missouri B. Nichole presented the Top Student Paper award to Susan Mello & Sarah Parvanta (University of Pennsylvania) for Routine and Deliberate Information Exposure Effects on Mammography Behavior. C. Nichole presented Top Paper awards to: 1. Encouraging Mexican-heritage Youth to Intervene when Friends Drink: The Role of Targeted Parent-Child Communication about Alcohol, Jennifer Kam, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Bridget Potocki, Ohio State University, & Michael Hecht, Pennsylvania State University 2. A New Voice in Health Communication Messages: Effects of Persuasive Hope Appeals on Subjective Feelings of Hope, Amy Chadwick, Ohio University 3. Too Fat, Too Thin, Just Right: Descriptions of the Perfect Female Body, Mary Bresnahan & Jenn Anderson, Michigan State University 4. Routine and Deliberate Information Exposure Effects on Mammography Behavior, Susan Mello & Sarah Parvanta, University of Pennsylvania D. Kami presented the Article of the Year award to Walid Afifi (University of California, Santa Barbara) and Judith Weiner (Miami of Ohio University) for (2010) Seeking Information about Sexual Health: Applying the Theory of Motivated Information Management, Human Communication Research, 32 (1), 35-57. E. Kami presented the Outstanding Scholar award to Sandi Smith, Michigan State University. V. Old Business A. Lance discussed the Division award for Dale Brashers. 1. Dale E. Brashers Distinguished Mentor award description and criteria was provided. 2. The way the award is written the immediate past chair solicits three division members to form the committee each year. Some members asked if a volunteer element should be added where a member can volunteer to be on committee. After discussion the current language regarding this topic was left as it is currently written. 3. A motion by Kami Silk to cap the number of letters of support per nominee at three for this award was approved. 4. A motion passed to table this award until the 2012 business meeting, in order to examine what the division needs to do to make the award a NCA Endowed award. VI. New Business A. Kami presented the Coalition for Health Communication (CHC) Report. 1. CHC is having a Logo competition with the selected winner receiving $500. 2. CHC is one of the most popular searches online in regards to those seeking information about graduate school programs. VII. Announcements from the Floor A. Brad Mello (representative of NCA) discusses the new website for NCA that will be rolled out in a month or so. He also briefly discussed the technological features of the website, which include individual blogs/micro-websites for all 66 units of NCA. B. An announcement was made regarding the semi-annual preconference, and the need for graduate student participation. C. Guest editor Anthony J. Roberto of Arizona State University is seeking manuscript submissions by February 1, 2012 for a Health Communication Special Issue titled, The Extended Parallel Process Model: Two Decades Later. Email him at Anthony.roberto@asu.edu if you are willing to serve on the editorial board for the special issue. D. Co-editors Katheryn Maguire of Wayne State University and Steve Wilson of Purdue University are seeking manuscript submissions by April 15, 2012 for a Health Communication Special Issue on Communication and Wartime Deployment. Email them at kmaguire@wayne.edu or wilson25@purdue.edu if you have any inquires regarding this special issue. E. Call for papers, posters, and panels for the Kentucky Conference on Health Communication (KCHC) held in Lexington, Kentucky from April 19-21, 2012. Abstract submission deadline is December 11, 2011. KCHC is accepting nominations for the Lewis Donohew Outstanding Scholar in Health Communication award. This award recognizes outstanding research contributions to the health communication field made during the biennium preceding each conference. The deadline for receipt of nominations is January 27, 2012. F. Various institutional and departmental representatives made job ad announcements. VIII. Passing of the gavel A.
