Elementary Large Group Experience 1st-5th Grade October 5 & 6th, 2013 Bible Story: Hit Me With Your Best Shot (Samuel anoints David / David and Goliath) • 1 Samuel 16:1-13; 17:1-58 Bottom Line: Honor others by giving them a chance. Memory Verse: “Love each other deeply. Honor others more than yourselves.” Romans 12:10 NIrV Life App: Honor—letting someone know you see how valuable they really are. Basic Truth: I should treat others the way I want to be treated. FOR LEADERS ONLY All of God’s creation is important to Him. Jesus told us that God remembers each sparrow, even though there are thousands (Luke 12:6-7). But Jesus said that people are even more valuable to God. In fact, God counts every hair on our heads! God shows us how important we are to Him when He pursues a relationship with us. And He started in the very beginning when He sought out Adam and Eve in the Garden. God shows us how much He values us because He loves us. Honor is letting someone know you see how valuable they really are. Like God’s honor is fueled by His love for us, we show honor back to God because we love Him. And we follow God’s example when we show honor to others. Showing honor demonstrates that we see others as God sees them. Every person we meet has value to God and deserves our honor. An inability to show honor to others is often a symptom of a self-centered attitude. Too often, we see ourselves as more valuable than someone else. We are tempted to try to honor ourselves rather than honor others. But when we remember that Jesus came to serve and not to be served, we recognize that BASIC TRUTH: I should treat others the way I want to be treated LIFE APP: HONOR BOTTOM LINE: MEMORY VERSE: BIBLE STORY FOCUS: Honor others by giving them a chance “Love eachother deeply. Honor others more than yourselves.” Romans 12:10 1 Samuel 16: 1-13; 17:1-58 Elementary Large Group Experience 1st-5th Grade October 5 & 6th, 2013 our place is to show others how valuable they are. This month, let’s think about how: (1) Giving honor to those that are different than us is not always easy. God showed honor towards us. As we become more like Him, we will begin showing honor to everyone. (2) The Bible challenges us to respond to others with honor even when it costs us something. (3) Honoring others shows them that we see them as God sees them. This week, we’re discovering: In this week’s Bible story, David didn’t seem like someone who would be the next king, and he sure didn’t look like he could defeat a giant (1 Samuel 16:1-13; 17:1-58). But God could see David’s heart and He knew David was worthy of honor. Samuel and all the Israelite army soon learned that people might be able to do far more than we expect. Our Bottom Line is: honor others by giving them a chance. The kid who seems like an underdog at recess might just need a supportive opportunity. The janitor, lunch lady, or bus driver might have some wise advice. Even the cool kid might have an insecurity she’s sensitive about. We must be careful to avoid categorizing people just because of one characteristic. Everyone deserves a chance to be more than we expect. The monthly memory verse is: “Love each other deeply. Honor others more than yourselves.” Romans 12:10, NIrV When we give people a chance, we show them that their ideas, feelings, and abilities are valuable. We give them honor by recognizing the contributions they can make in our lives. . Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Ask God to give the kids courage and compassion to see the potential in other people. Pray they will realize every person they come in contact with is valuable to God. Ask God to use other people to help the kids grow. Plug In: LARGE GROUP EXPERIENCE 15 minutes into service NEW!!! You see, I’ve invented an amazing new sport. And because you guys are so super-awesome, YOU are going to be the FIRST people on the planet to experience it! You see? Honor! But first, I need to see what kind of sports YOU like. How about you? What’s your favorite sport? Call on two or three kids and react to their favorite sport. (“Yeah, me too! I love basketball!”) “Cool. Yeah, I know! Sports are awesome. I love ’em all. And my friends are the same way. [Friend’s name] is all about college football. [Friend’s name] is into baseball. And [friend’s name] plays soccer on the weekends. Assistant: [Personalize] these with your real-life friends and the sports they like. Ideally, these should match up with the gear you’re wearing. “Now you may be wondering about all of this sports equipment on stage here. Well, see I love ALL of the sports my friends play. But … I’m not very good at most of them. So I decided to make up my OWN sport—one that has never been seen before on planet Earth. It may just change your life. I call it … Basket-Half-Pipe-Capture-the-Wiffle-Pong. (Adjust this depending on what sports equipment you have.) SFX: Stadium applause or cue kids to clap wildly “Yes! I’m glad you’re excited! Basket-Half-Pipe-Capture-the-Wiffle-Pong! “You see, I figure if I make up my own sport, then I’m destined for greatness. I’m on the Road to Glory! I will play the game with honor. I WILL be the champion! SFX: Stadium applause or cue kids to clap wildly “So here’s how this game is going to work: Demonstrate the steps while you describe them. (You’ll need to adjust the following dialogue for your own equipment—just make sure that you end with some sort of basketball hoop.) “Step 1: I start here by dribbling the ball between my legs. Step 2: I throw it in the air, spin in a circle, and catch it behind the back with my baseball glove. Step 3: I lay down a righteous beat with my Ping-Pong paddles. Step 4: I throw myself an alley-oop, catch it, and dunk … (Hesitating, realizing he can’t do this without a partner.) Uh, right. Um. Maybe this isn’t going to be so easy by myself.” BASIC TRUTH: I should treat others the way I want to be treated LIFE APP: HONOR BOTTOM LINE: MEMORY VERSE: BIBLE STORY FOCUS: Honor others by giving them a chance “Love eachother deeply. The boy no one had even considered was about to do something NO ONE else had the guts to do. He grabbed his slingshot and marched out into the valley, straight toward that giant. “Listen to what David said to Goliath … Open the Bible to 1 Samuel 17:45-46 and read. “‘You are coming to fight against me with a sword, a spear and a javelin. But I’m coming against you in the name of the LORD who rules over all. He is the God of the armies of Israel. He’s the one you have dared to fight against. This very day the LORD will hand you over to me. I’ll strike you down … Then the whole world will know there is a God in Israel.’ (NIrV) “As Goliath raced forward to attack, David ran to meet him! He placed a stone into his slingshot and whipped it around in the air. The stone flew from the sling and hit Goliath on the forehead. He fell down dead with his face to the ground. “David had won the battle for the Israelites! Turn hand into a fist, pump into the air, then point up to God. That story is intense! Sure the David and Goliath part was great, but you know what’s really cool? I love how we can look back and see how God had been working in David’s life all along the way. “God wanted a king who was a man after His own heart. God had seen David’s true value and gave him a chance right from the beginning. And since David knew how God felt about him, he could show courage on the battlefield. It’s what helped him trust God and to take down a GIANT to save God’s people. “God can use anyone. So, we need to honor everyone! We need to give others a chance—like God did with David. We shouldn’t look at what’s on the outside. We need to [Impress] honor others by giving them a chance. CG: Bottom Line Slide “Let’s pray and ask God to help us do that.” Pray LEADER: “God, it is so great to know that You don’t look at what’s on the outside, but You look at the heart! Thanks for knowing each one of us inside and out … the good stuff and the bad stuff … the things we get excited about … the things that scare us … the things we care about the most. We want to be like David. We want to have a heart that cares about YOU most of all. Thanks for giving David a chance to do such amazing things for You. Please help us remember to honor other people, too, and give THEM a chance—just like You did with David. We ask these things in Jesus’ name, amen.” TECH: Show Closer Video Clip DISMISS KIDS BACK TO CLASSES FOR SMALL GROUPS BASIC TRUTH: I should treat others the way I want to be treated LIFE APP: HONOR BOTTOM LINE: MEMORY VERSE: BIBLE STORY FOCUS: Honor others by giving them a chance “Love eachother deeply.
