Medal of Honor Heroes Of The
Spanish-American War
On the dark night of February 15, 1898 the USS
Maine was riding anchor in the harbor at Havana,
Cuba when it was rocked by a horrible explosion.
When daylight dawned the newest and most powerful
ship of the American fleet rested on the bottom of the
harbor, 260 of its crew and officers were either dead
or missing.
Though subsequent inquiry never established the
cause of the explosion, at home in the United States it
was widely believed that the disaster had been a
planned attack by Cuban forces loyal to Spain. In the
months that followed, the cry "Remember the Maine"
became a call for war, and the excuse for the United States to launch the first attack in what would
become the Spanish-American War.
On the morning of May 1, 1898 Commodore George Dewey sailed his Asiatic fleet into Manila Bay
in the Philippine Islands. In a 6-hour naval battle he destroyed the Spanish squadron, giving the
United States its first victory of the war and establishing the United States Navy as the preeminent
naval force in the world. Over the next 120 days the United States and Spain waged war in the
Philippines, Cuba and Puerto Rico. In these battles 110 American soldiers, sailors and marines
would see their valor rewarded with the Medals of Honor.

Cienfuegos Cable Cutting
Fifty-two Medals of Honor were awarded for action near
Cienfuegos, Cuba on May 11th. All of the citations read
simply:
"During the cutting of the cable leading from
Cienfuegos...Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, he set an
example throughout this action."
The simplicity of these citations cannot detract from the
extreme heroism displayed by detachments of Navy
Bluejackets and Marines from the USS Marblehead and USS
Nashville. Making their way towards the shoreline in small
launches from their respective ships, directly under the guns
and heavy enemy fire, the brave men dredged up and cut the
important underwater cables that linked the military forces at
Cienfuegos with its commanders and the rest of the world.
Twenty-six men from each of the two warships that
participated in the heroic mission, were awarded Medals of
Honor for their intrepid actions.

On the same day as the cable cutting mission in the south of Cuba, along the Northern coastline a
group of American warships entered the harbor at Cardenas. The US Torpedo Boat Winslow made
a reconnaissance of the harbor when it was taken under fire by the shore batteries. In a desperate
withdrawal, the Winslow's steam and hand steering gear was shot away. Chief Machinist Hans
Johnsen noted the rapidly escaping steam and, despite the very real danger of a horrible death from
its intense heat, struggled to shut off and contain the escaping steam.
On deck, the 25 men of the Winslow did their best to return fire and also control their now
floundering torpedo boat. Chief Gunner's Mate George Brady alternated between keeping his guns
firing and risking his life to attempt to repair the steering gear. Below deck, Chief Machinist
Thomas Cooney braved the menace wrought by enemy fire to extinguish the fires near the boiler to
keep the tubes from burning out.

Non-Combat Heroism
Boiler explosions aboard ship, whether caused by enemy fire or as a result of human error or
structural problems, posed great threat for potential disaster. Escaping steam and hot burning
coals made the work of containing boiler fires personally dangerous to individual sailors.
In two separate boiler incidents on two different ships of the American fleet tested the courage of
the brave sailors. The perils they faced to save their ships were every bit as great as the dangers of
armed combat. In these non-combat situations, the following five sailors received Medals of Honor
for efforts to contain fires as a result of boiler explosions, thereby saving their ships.

Sinking The Merrimac
For weeks the U.S. Navy searched for the Spanish
squadron assigned to patrol the Caribbean waters in an
near Cuba. When at last the ships under Rear Admiral
Pascual Cervera y Topete were located, they were at
anchor inside the narrow harbor at Santiago.
A daring plan was devised to trap the enemy squadron.
That plot involved sailing the old collier Merrimac into the
mouth of the harbor, where it would be scuttled by
strategically placed explosive charges to block the entrance
to the harbor and trap Cervera and his squadron.
The plan was a dangerous one, sailing the unreliable old
vessel, rigged with explosive, directly under the enemy guns
high above on the Morro Castle, and directly into Cervera's
lair. Seven volunteers under Lieutenant Richmond Hobson
attempted this task in the early morning darkness of May
3rd.
Their mission was largely unsuccessful and all eight men very subsequently captured, but their
heroic efforts became legendary among friend and foe. Upon taking the men prisoner, Admiral
Cervera himself greeted them with one word..."Valiente".

The Ground War
The ground war began on June 10th when 623 Marines
under Colonel Robert Huntington landed at Guantanamo
Bay in Cuba.
Moving quickly inland, the Marines
established their first position overlooking the bay at Camp
McCalla.
Though the landing and first 24 hours at Cuba was without
resistance, the lull was broken by two days of violent attacks
and hidden ambush launched against the newly arrived
Marine.
On June 14th the Huntington's Marines went on the
offensive, working their way towards the Cuzco Well, where
the first major ground battle of the Spanish-American War
was bitterly fought. Two Marines earned Medals of Honor
in what would be the last ground action for the
Leathernecks. Their decisive victory at Cuzco convinced
the Spanish Commanders to pull their forces back to the
city rather than risk annihilation.

U.S. Army Engagements In Cuba
On June 22nd the first soldiers of General Rufus
Shafter's Fifth Corps began landing at Siboney, west of
the Marine position at Guantanamo Bay. Over the
following days American soldiers continued to make their
way from their transports to the shore, set up their
bivouacs, and move inland towards the city of Santiago.
Two days after the initial landing, elements of the First
Brigade (which included the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry,
the Rough Riders), engaged the Spanish forces in the first
major battle of the US Army in Cuba. At Las Guasimas
these soldiers under General Henry War Lawton, who
had earned the Medal of Honor during the Civil War,
faced a superior enemy force in fortified positions.
Despite heavy casualties, the Americans pressed the
attack driving forward towards their goal, Santiago.

The Battle for Santiago de Cuba
By July 1st Shafter's Fifth Corps had moved steadily
northwest towards Santiago, and was poised for what would
become the decisive land battle of the Spanish-American
War.
On the morning of July 1st General Shafter sent his 2nd
Division north to attack El Caney, while the remainder of his
Corps attacked the heights overlooking Santiago, two small
hills outside the city of San Juan.
El Caney
As General Lawton's troops moved towards El Caney in
the pre-dawn hour of July 1st, their progress was
hampered by constant and deadly sniper fire, enemy
soldiers in trenched positions, and fences and barricades.
The garrison at El Caney was heavily defended by
Spanish soldiers well-entrenched is six heavy timber
blockhouses and a fortified stone church. At 10 A.M. the
17th Infantry was ordered to attack the high ground, and
rushed forward under the command of Lieutenant
Colonel Haskell. Ahead of his men and only four hundred
yards from the Spanish lines, Colonel Haskell fell
mortally wounded. Two officers and five enlisted men
from Company C of the 17th Infantry earned Medals of
Honor for their subsequent efforts to recover the body of
their leader.
In other actions that day, two men from Company D, 17th US Infantry also earned Medals of
Honor for rescuing wounded comrades far who had fallen in the front of the lines.

While Lawton's 2nd Division was fighting its way into El
Caney, the remainder of the Fifth Corps was battling its
way up two adjacent hills overlooking the city of Santiago.
Known as San Juan and Kettle Hills, it was a battle that
would make Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders National
heroes, though Roosevelt himself was the only Rough

The Naval Battle of Santiago
Spanish Admiral Cervera's squadron was trapped
inside Santiago Harbor by a US Naval blockade at the
harbor entrance. With US Army forces now controlling
the heights over the city and harbor, his situation was
hopeless.
On July 3rd the Spanish Admiral ordered his ships into
a single file as he made a desperate dash for safer
waters. As his ships cleared the harbor entrance, they
were met by the American warships.
The two-hour Naval Battle of Santiago de Cuba was a
key moment in history. US warships fired nearly 10,000
rounds to totally destroy all six ships of Cervera's squadron, and erase the last vestiges of a once
legendary Spanish Armada. In that action, though more than 300 Spanish sailors were killed in
heavy fighting, the US Navy suffered only one man killed in action. While valor abounded on both
sides, only one sailor earned the Medal of Honor in one of the most legendary naval battles of
world history.
