Background information for students The Daily Telegraph is believed to have paid a large sum of money for the information it revealed in May 2009 about expenses claimed by UK MPs. Although there were already plans to make public the amount of MPs’ expense claims, this would not have revealed as much detail as the Telegraph printed. The Telegraph claimed the story was a triumph for old-style journalism, which involved days of research by a team of journalists. Circulation of the Telegraph increased while this story was running. http://education.matthewslally.continuumbooks.com © Ruth Matthews and Jo Lally (2010) The Thinking Teacher’s Toolkit.
