Student Directions for Acid Rain in Michigan
You will need to open up PowerPoint presentation with 9 slides.
1. Open Internet Explorer and go to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Acid Rain
Web site: http://www.epa.gov/acidrain/index.html
2. Read the information on the Web page to learn about acid rain. Slide 1: List 12 different
facts about acid rain.
3. Go to the National Atmospheric Deposition Web site to collect data for the pH levels of
rainwater for our state: http://nadp.sws.uiuc.edu/sites/ntnmap.asp?
4. Click on Michigan. Click on each NTA site in Lower Michigan (there are 5), and record
the location, longitude, latitude, and pH level for each location (This will be Slide 2, Slide
3, Slide 4, Slide 5, and Slide 6). To get the pH level click Trend Plots, click Field pH
and then Create Plot. Record the information for the first two most current years.
5. Answer the following questions based on your research: (Slide 7)
a. How does your state compare to “normal” rainwater pH of 5.5?
b. What trends in the data do you see for Michigan?
c.
What do you think are the major contributors of acid rain in Michigan?
d. What can you do to help prevent acid rain?
6. Slide 8: Type at least one full paragraph describing what can be done to prevent acid
rain.
7. Slide 9: This slide needs to contain the first and last names of the people who worked
on the assignment.
