Job Description:
8
We all care deeply about our environment. We also know that, as a country, we need to be taking
more action to ensure our environment is preserved, especially when powerful interests stand in
the way.
Environment America is hiring recent college graduates for our Fellowship Program.
Environment America, the federation of state-based environment groups, acts as a powerful
advocate for our environment: to promote energy efficiency, to protect our open spaces, to clean
up our air and water, and to advance global warming solutions. We speak out and take action at
the local, state, and national levels to improve the quality of our environment and our lives.
Fellowship Program: 2008 – 2010 Job Description
We’re hiring recent college graduates to help win campaigns with Environment America. Our
organization’s efforts to pass renewable energy standards in states across the country and at the
federal level have already resulted in decreasing global warming pollution – the equivalent of
taking 1.5 million cars off the road. We have preserved our natural heritage by securing
permanent protection for 58.5 million acres of pristine wilderness areas in 39 states. We
protected countless waterways in the states, including the passage of 7 ocean protection bills in
California.
Environment America Fellows will get a chance to work with some of the top environmental
advocates and organizers in the country, and will have an immediate impact on critical
environmental issues. The Fellowship Program gives recent college graduates the training and
experience to assume leadership roles in the environmental movement for the long term.
Issue Associate: As an issue associate, you’ll master your issue area and build the kind of
powerful support it takes to make your voice heard and change public policy. Responsibilities
include: researching and writing reports, developing and coordinating campaigns, preparing
legislative testimony, building statewide and national coalitions, organizing media events, raising
funds, and meeting with elected officials.
Field Associate: As a field associate, you’ll build and demonstrate support for proposals at the
state or federal level to ensure that decision-makers hear from and pay attention to the public.
You must quickly master the basics of a variety of issues, and then reach out to individuals,
media outlets and organizations to build visibility and gain their support. Issue associates and
field associates may work on any of the following issues: global warming, energy policy, clean
air and water, preserving our open spaces, and more. Each associate takes on the critical role of
building the organization by canvassing at various times during the year and running a citizen
outreach office during the summer.
Qualifications
We are looking for recent college graduates who care about our environment and are driven to
preserve it for the future. We look for strong leadership skills, academic excellence, problem
solving ability, and top-notch written and verbal skills. We value experience with campus and
activist groups.
Training and Experience
A key part of the Environment America mission is to train leaders who are capable of organizing
and winning results for our environment. Immediately following an intensive training, fellows
are trusted with significant responsibilities in their jobs. The training lasts 10 days, is fully paid,
and starts in mid-August in Boston. Four additional trainings take place during the rest of the
year. Training topics include skills and political strategy, and topics are covered in a mix of
lectures, classroom briefings and discussions, role-plays, and in-the-field training. Throughout
the year, you gain valuable skills and experience in both making your voice heard on the issues
and in building an organization through grant-writing, canvassing, recruiting and managing staff,
and directing campaigns.
Placement
Fellowship candidates are hired nationwide and placed in Environment America offices across
the country. If you are interested only in particular locations, you will be asked to identify those
locations during the interview process. If you are offered a fellowship position, you are
9
guaranteed placement in one of your desired locations. In most cases, final placement, including
location and position, occurs during the August training in Boston.
Salary & Benefits
As a recent graduate, you will earn $23,750 in your first year and $24,250 in your second year.
Salary for experienced candidates is commensurate with relevant professional experience and/or
advanced degrees. You will be eligible to opt in to our group health plan, and will accrue two
weeks paid vacation over the course of your first year, three weeks in your second year and will
be eligible to apply for college loan assistance. In your second year, you will also be eligible to
participate in our 401(k) plan.

Environment America is currently hiring for positions in: Phoenix, AZ; Los Angeles, CA;

Sciences (agriculture & plant/biological/earth & atmosphere), Forestry, Water
Job Description: The Nature Conservancy (TNC) will be hosting science and conservation
internships during the summer and fall of 2008. This is a unique opportunity to bridge the gap
between what is learned in the classroom and work done in the real world of conservation to
promote a sustainable planet. The Conservation Science Internship Program (CSIP), designed to
help TNC draw broadly from a variety of socio‐cultural experiences, to build diversity in
conservation, and to increase its programs’ conservation science capacity, will match qualified
and enthusiastic college and university students with appropriate TNC programs and mentors
throughout the world. TNC CSIP staff will ensure good matches between intern and mentor/host
program such that interns receive a quality experience, a committed mentor, and relevant training.
Interns begin the program with an orientation retreat (travel expenses covered) in which TNC
19
science leaders and academic mentors gather and share professional and career experiences, as
well as help formulate internship projects so that they have greatest chance to succeed. In
addition to mentoring, the intern program will provide an outstanding network of conservation
professionals to draw on in future years. Although our program is still relatively small in 2008,
we hope to expand it over time, reaching greater numbers of diverse students around the world,
and eventually contributing to the diversity, size, and effectiveness of the global conservation
workforce.
Eligibility:
1. The successful Nature Conservancy Conservation Science Internship Program candidate
should demonstrate at least one of the following:
• Contribution to TNC’s diversity. Student has circumstances, experiences, skills or talents that
would benefit others and would enhance the diversity of TNC.
• Barriers to success. Student has successfully overcome (or is successfully overcoming) barriers,
disadvantages or adversity ‐ educational, social, cultural, or economic ‐ in a way
that would enable him or her to contribute to TNC’s conservation mission in a manner that also
enhances its diversity.
• Commitment to diversity. Student has shown and can demonstrate a deep and active
commitment to the issue of human diversity and conservation (for example, promoting access to
nature and conservation for underserved groups).
2. Other Eligibility Requirements:
• Student has secured the commitment of a faculty member to serve as an advisor during the
internship ;
• Student has exceptional academic aptitude and record;
• Student is able to demonstrate a commitment to conservation of the natural world;
• Student must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. Recent graduates (2006 or
2007) may also apply.
How it works:
1. Three types of Diversity Internships are available:
• TNC US Diversity Scholarship: a limited number (3‐5) of competitive, paid internships
for US citizens are being offered as a means to increase diversity in TNC’s United States
programs.
• TNC Global Diversity Scholarship: a limited number (3‐5) of competitive, paid
internships will be available for students from outside the US to work in TNC country programs .
• University or grant‐funded Internships: Student must demonstrate on the application
form that they have acquired either institutional or other grant support for their internship (these
amounts (stipend + expenses) will vary depending on the country where the internship takes
place – please contact Renée Mullen (rmullen@tnc.org) directly if you have questions about this).
2. Application Instructions:
• Applicants must fill out and submit the 2008 Internship application by February 15, 2008.
• Application forms (+ resume) should be submitted electronically to Renée Mullen
(rmullen@tnc.org)
3. The process of choosing internship recipients will occur in two phases:
• Applications will be screened for eligibility, qualifications, and level of fit with TNC project
needs by The CSIP Advisory panel ‐ a diverse panel of conservation practitioners, TNC
staff, and academic scientists. Successful applications will be referred to participating TNC
programs, which will interview students (by phone) and select a student with whom to write a
full project proposal.
• The student, TNC supervisor, and the student’s academic internship advisor will then write a
full project proposal to be reviewed by the CSIP Advisory Panel prior to the 2008 science
internship kickoff retreat.
