HOW TO BE A HOMESTAY FAMILY PROCESS 1. A Hanwood staff visits to your home to interview and to assess the accommodations for the student. 2. Complete the Homestay Application Form. 3. A Criminal Record Search must be submitted for all household members who are 18 years or older. It must be obtained through the Winnipeg Police Department at the Public Safety Building, 151 Princess St. or may be obtained by mail using the following website for instructions and downloadable forms: http://www.winnipeg.ca/police/BPR/info_request.stm#crim_record_search 4. Return all materials to: Hanwood Inc. 6 Lindenwood Place Winnipeg, MB R3P 1M2 5. It is the responsibility of all applicants to inform Hanwood Inc. any change in status in your family. EXPECTATIONS Homestay families are chosen for their keen interest in other cultures and good English language skills. Becoming a homestay family requires a commitment to provide a meaningful family environment for the student. The homestay family is expected to provide: 1. An English speaking environment. 2. A separate bedroom for each student a. with a window b. nearby smoke detector and fire drill procedures to be explained c. bed, bedding, towels, dresser, desk, chair, lamp, closet d. adequate heat, light and ventilation e. provision for decorating their room 3. Three healthy meals daily and other reasonable incidental foods. Please discuss with your student who is responsible for which meals. 5. Access to laundry facilities and procedures/routines. 6. Fire extinguishers, especially in the kitchen, are advised. 7. Full use of the household, with an understanding of use of all electronic equipment (computer, TV, telephone) The homestay family should also be prepared to meet reasonable transportation needs. However, this does not include daily transportation to and from school except in special short-term programs. HOMESTAY FEE: Homestay families will receive a monthly fee of $600.00 directly from Hanwood or through your school division. The homestay fee is not meant to cover the student’s extracurricular school costs and extra costs for family trips, though some families may choose to pay for some activities.
