Delaware Secondary School Mathematics League
The Delaware Secondary School Mathematics League sponsored by the Delaware Council of
Teachers of Mathematics (DCTM) celebrated its thirtieth year of operation. Three hundred
thirty-one teams with an estimated 2,100 students from 87 schools competed state-wide at grades
7, 8, 9, and 10-12. The 87 schools represented 16 of the 19 public school districts and many
private and parochial schools. There were 209 middle school teams competing in eleven regions
and 122 high school teams competing in six regions. The Mathematics League Coordinators are
Denise I. Griffiths from Delaware Technical and Community College for Grades 7-8 and
Thomas J. Koliss from Newark High School for Grades 9-12.
Four regular regional meets were held throughout the school year culminating with a combined
Invitational Meet and Awards Banquet at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover. Over 1,200
students, coaches and parents registered for the three Invitational Meets and Awards Banquets
held in April. The chef at the Modern Maturity Center shared some statistics with the Math
League participants. For the three banquets, he and his staff cooked 1,600 pounds of chicken,
700 pounds of potatoes, 600 pounds of green beans and 480 pounds of roast beef. No one left
the banquets hungry!
High scoring teams and individuals from the regional competitions were invited to participate in
the Invitational Meets. During the awards ceremony following each banquet, regional awards
and Invitational Meet awards were presented to the high scoring teams and individuals. The
results of the regional competitions and the three Invitational Meets are given below.
