NIKE INSTALLATION June 16, 2001 Tonight it is my happy privilege to install the 2001-2002 District and State Officers of the North Carolina Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Organization. But before I do this, would the State Officers, District Officers and State Chairs for the past year please stand. You have demonstrated the many achievements that can be accomplished by active participation and cooperation but most of all by FAITH in your organization. May the warmth and brightness of the rays you have left serve to inspire those who will now be entrusted with this responsibility. We express our thanks for the fine job you have done for this organization in Lighting the Way to the Future. In this capacity you will serve as the liaisons between the local organizations and the National and State Boards. You will plan and conduct district meetings attended by the local leaderships and members in order to network, inform, train and form a cooperative cohesion with the state leadership. You will provide assistance and guidance to the local leadership. Do you accept these responsibilities of your office? Its members have thereby delegated to you the responsibilities of guiding them toward the fulfillment of the ultimate mission, goals and objectives of the Federation. They have, thus, affirmed their belief that you possess the necessary qualities of loyalty, endeavor, wisdom, understanding and vision to rise to these responsibilities. The success or failure of this State Federation depends upon how you bear these responsibilities. With the entire Federation unified in effort, you, as officers, can accomplish these objectives. The Nike (HOLD UP ONE) is the symbol of strength, progress, freedom, and triumph, facing squarely the winds and waves of prejudice and all other limitations. Standing poised, she courageously breasted the elements even as women today are taking advantage of opportunities and creating others all over the world, coming into their own in business and the professions and overcoming obstacles. The Nike has been selected as our symbol for the 2001-02 Year. Kay Jones, please come forward. As the newly appointed Parliamentarian, I give to you the Turquoise Nike of Stability and balance. You have been chosen by the President to serve as the consultant to the Executive Committee and Board of Directors. Your duties consist of callint to the President’s attention any proceedings that may affect the rights of any members. You may be asked to clarify or answer questions regarding parliamentary procedures and the Federation By-Laws. This Turquoise Nike represents your ability to give counsel with patience and wisdom to the Federation officers and board. Do you accept the responsibility of the office of Parliamentarian? Lyn Weaver, as the Immediate Past President, I give to you the Orange Nike of Service, with the hope that you will continue to share your skills, experience and friendship with the new board of directors. May you continue to light our way into the future with your guidance and advise to those who follow your footsteps. This Orange Nike symbolizes the appreciation of your continued service to this Federation. Do you accept the responsibility of the office of Immediate Past President? _______________, as Treasurer, I give you the Yellow Nike of Integrity. In your hands rests the material wealth of this organization as well as its reputation for meeting obligations promptly. You must study the duties set up for you in the bylaws, disburse moneys only upon the proper authorization and maintain accurate current records, giving a complete accounting when required. This Yellow Nike of Integrity symbolizes the faith and trust of your fellow members. Do you accept the responsibility of the office of Treasurer? Linda Hardy, as Secretary, I give to you the Blue Nike of Accuracy and Graciousness. Your duty is to keep accurate and complete records of the proceedings of the Federation. It requires the ability to condense hours of work into a few pages of history, yet a history that faithfully records the progress and deliberations of the Federation. You also must truly convey to others the sentiments and wishes of your organization through your correspondence. Your choice of words will reflect its forcefulness, its courtesy, its tack and its friendliness. This Blue Nike of Accuracy and Graciousness will highlight your year and represents the confidence your members place in you and the cordial outstretched hand your members know you have. Do you accept the responsibility of the office of Secretary? Varnell Kinnen, as Vice President, I give to you the Green Nike of Harmony. You are the understudy for your President. You are lighting the path of the future that signifies your readiness to give your President the harmony and faithfulness that should accompany your office. It is your duty to harmonize your efforts with the efforts of your President. Give of your wisdom and experience at all times and strive to work faithfully with her in carrying out the Federation’s high aims and ideals. The Green Nike of Harmony represents your cooperation and ability to benefit your organization. Do you accept the responsibility of the office of Vice President? Betty Morrison, as President-Elect, yours is the Red Nike of Responsibility. Learn all about the organization…its progress and history…in preparation for your year to follow as President. Upon your shoulders rests the importance of continuance of the mission, goals and objectives of the Federation. Your cooperation and ability will bring you much personal satisfaction and your organization will benefit. The Red Nike represents your responsibility to lead this Organization forward. Do you accept the responsibility of the office of President-Elect? Linda McGehee, as President of the North Carolina BPW Federation, you have been given the highest honor your organization can bestow on any member. It is your responsibility to understand and interpret the mission, goals and objectives of our Federation. You will be the voice of our organization in National and State activities. You are the representative of Business and Professional women in community affairs. It will be your interest and devotion to your Federation that will encourage and stimulate its members. Your Federation, in order to reach the full measure of success this year, will require a great deal of your time which we know you will give freely. Strive to keep your Federation’s character warm with light and life. As a token of your honor, I give you the Violet Nike of Leadership. The Violet Nike stands for the love, strength and leadership abilities that we know are yours. May these attributes permeate all your activities throughout the year. Do you accept the Nike of Leadership and the office of President? Incoming officers, yours is the task of immediately familiarizing yourselves with the duties of your offices. Proceed with these duties in the spirit of devotion and endeavor which has characterized your past activities in your local organization. As leaders, protect the high ideals of your Federation and live up to its principles and regulations. Focus your attention on the larger objectives by working together. I know each of you will count it a real honor and privilege to serve your Federation. Members of the North Carolina Federation of Business and Professional Women, will you please rise? You have chosen these officers to voice your wishes in all matters related to the functioning of your State organization. While you have entrusted the destiny of your Federation to them, never forget that in the last analysis these officers are only your spokespersons. Yours is the task of assisting and advising them, of supporting them in the chosen policies of your State Organization, and of working with them in community affairs. Unite with them in common service to the business and professional women of the world. Members, do you accept these responsibilities? With this unity of purpose as endless as the Golden Circle enclosing our Emblem, I present the new officers of the North Carolina Federation of Business and Professional Women and declare them duly installed.
