Efforts in Membership development
-
During Executive Committee meetings of IEEE Islamabad Sections, it has been a
regular feature / Agenda point to discuss the status of membership development
within the geographical territory of IEEE Islamabad Section. Based on feed back
from the Chair Membership Development detail deliberation is done for possible
measures to enhance IEEE membership. In the last Ex Com meeting it was
highlighted that IEEE members especially student members are reluctant to renew
their membership because of recent exponential rise in US dollar verse Pakistan
Rupee conversion rate, as IEEE membership fees is required to be paid in US
dollars. Much deliberations was held and it was finally decided that a committee
be formed who should meet the Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC)
in Pakistan and try to convince him to some how issue instruction to professional
universities and educational institutions, under its domain, to share the
membership fees of faculty and students desirous of taking IEEE membership
keeping in view of enormous benefits IEEE provides to individuals for their
professional and leadership growth. Subject team has been formed and they are
going to meet the Chairman HEC, shortly for afore said purpose.
-
A special slot has been established for Senior Student Representative and a senior
student been nominated for the slot, primarily to give direct representation to
student members which are part of student branches available in different
educational institutions. Moreover, through him Ex Com to get feed back on
problems / issues related to student & student branches plus accordingly strategy
defined to launch membership development campaign plus measures to ensure
retentions of IEEE student membership.
-
Outreach and awareness campaign have been launched especially in educational
institutions to attract faculty members/ students for joining IEEE.
-
Held social gathering in the shape of dinner at the Section / student branch levels
to facilitate members / students to do networking and especially to get in touch
with the lapsed members.
-
Special attention has been given to update the section website to better promote
IEEE activities. In this regard plan has been made for having a website with much
more dynamic features.
-
For the mage event of ICET 2010 conference, which was co-sponsored by IEEE
Islamabad Section, invitation letters were sent to the heads of all the relevant
public and private sector educational institutions, departments and industries.
Their response was very positive and we had reasonably good gathering on the
events.
-
The Chair Membership Development Activities visited different universities/
institutes and approached through emails to members who have not renewed their
membership.
-
In major events like international conferences, workshops & seminars etc special
desks equipped / display with IEEE promotional materials to encourage
membership development are established plus exclusive arrangement made to
facilitate motivated faculty and student for filing IEEE joining applications
directly from the IEEE desks.

Communication Activities
Newsletter
The name of Newsletter being published is Newsletter IEEE Islamabad Section.
Mr Muhammad Hafiz is the Editor Newsletter and he is working to publish
subject newsletter on quarterly basis.
Section Website
The URL of the section website is www.ewh.ieee.org/r10/islamabad/;. The
Section website is regularly being updated. It has been updated with dynamic
features, and comments of the Ex Com members are taken on regular bais to
improve it to good standard website.
Means of Communication amongst section members.
Most of the communication amongst the section members is taken place through
email especially in the case of Ex Com members where, apart of meeting in Ex
Com meetings, communication is done through email which is quick and
effective.
PART C- OTHERS
C-1: Relationship with National Societies:
IEEE Islamabad Section has always strived to liaise with the national societies,
playing an active part in their areas of interest, to help them in their cause for the
great interest of national Development. Pakistan Engineering Council is one of
such societies. One of our Ex Com members, Dr Muhammad Akbar is the
member of Technical Committee of Pakistan Engineering Council, Islamabad,
and through his presence very effective coordination being taken place with them
organizing joint events of seminars & workshops etc. Moreover, inputs are also
given to PEC for framing engineering related policies which can be beneficial to
engineers and for the national development.
C-2:
Special Events
Social Events:
-
C-3
The Ex Com Meeting on 2 Apr, 2010 held in a Islamabad Club, where
counselors of different Student branches were also invited. The meeting
was followed by a dinner. The occasion gave an opportunity to have an
interaction with the counselor of student branches and the problems they
were facing to enhance membership development. Moreover, at the
society / student branches level one each social functions were arranged.
Similar activity was arranged on 30 Dec, 2010 in which all Ex Com
members and other guests attended the event.
Problems to be Anticipated
Difficulties in Membership Development / Retention
It has been observed, while carrying out membership development campaigns,
that the main hurdle in new members getting on board is the high membership fee
of IEEE plus due to exponential rise in US Dollar verses Pakistan Rupees
conversion rate. Though at our section level efforts are being made to some how
influence the educational institutions through the support of Higher Education
Commission in Pakistan to share the IEEE membership fee for faculty & students,
but still study needs to be carried out at IEEE USA to possibly revise / reduce the
fee structure especially in third world countries like Pakistan, India, Bangladesh
and Sri lanka etc where the income level of engineers is low as compared to
engineers of similar education / experience in American, European or other
advanced countries. The fee reduction will definitely help in promoting
membership drive and same will be long term beneficial for IEEE..
C-4
Best Practices
Introducing Best Section Awards
IEEE Islamabad Section has introduced Best Section Award amongst different
student branches. A part from motivating them to generate IEEE activities it
inculcate healthy competition between them. We believe that it has helped student
to actively participate in IEEE related activities.
Introduction of Senior Student Representative Slot in Ex Com
IEEE Islamabad Section has introduced recently a slot of Senior Student
Representative in Executive Committee of the Section, primarily to give direct
representation to student members which are part of student branches available in
different educational institutions. Moreover, through him Ex Com gets feed back
on problems / issues related to student & student branches plus accordingly,
strategy is defined to launch membership development campaign and measures to
ensure retentions of IEEE student membership.
PART D- GOALS AND PLANS
D-1:
GOALS:
It has been planned to at least double the IEEE membership figures, in different
categories, in the year 2010. Moreover, it has been planned to register at least 02
to 03 new Student Branches of Islamabad Section.
D-2:
IMPLEMENTATION PLANS:
Following measures have been planned for the year 2011 to achieve the goal set
by adopting a proactive approach toward membership development:-
As highlighted under subsection B-1, the Section Committee has been
formed to meet the Chairman Higher Education Commission (HEC) in
order to get his support to get issued directive to the educational institution
under HEC domain to share the IEEE membership fees for faculty and
students. If we some how achieve this objective then there will be
tremendous increase in membership amongst faculty & students, and we
shall be able to meet our target to double the figures of membership.
-
To reach the left over public and private sector institutions to support
participation of Electronics / Electrical / Computer engineers, based on
their organizations, in IEEE related activities and taking membership.
-
The section also plans on reaching out to students, from various
universities and Institutions, with the help of established student branches
to raise awareness about the benefits of registering a student branch / WIE
Affinity Group.
-
To enhance the pace of generating IEEE related activities for attracting
new members. Moreover, efforts will be made to reach most of the lapsed/
inactive members, and they will be motivated to renew their membership
so that they can earn the facilities being offered by IEEE to its active
members.
-
Professional members will be attracted by inviting individuals from
academia and industry to the section events and highlighting key features
such as exchange of knowledge and networking opportunities they can
avail through participating IEEE related activities.
