CAL-OSHA: 1. Create guidance standards
(flammable materials, health hazards, air
ventilation) similar to the ones developed for
other trade businesses (construction, etc)
specifically for the nail salon industry to help
set up the infrastructure so nail salon workers
can come to work and be safe.
2. Improve Permissible Exposure Levels for
harmful chemicals in nail care products, such as
toluene and DBP to make them more
protective.
3. Assisting with establishing appropriate
ventilation standards for nail salons in
conjunction, if necessary, with other state
agencies (ie. BBC, CARB)
4. Improve usefulness of MSDS by making
more user friendly and translating into
appropriate languages
5. Translating relevant health and safety
documents, complaint and inspection request
forms. Ensure that the process for reporting
health hazards to Cal/OSHA, filing complaints
and requesting inspections is linguistically
accessible and that inspectors as well as appeal
process staff speak the primary languages of
the nail salon community.
6. Develop culturally competent and
linguistically appropriate materials related to
health and safety issues and related protective
actions.
Collab members concluded CARB
site visits would not result in overly
negative consequences

workplace safety and serve as a
foundation for CalOSHA to
better understand the nail salon
industry
Working with CalOSHA to pilot
consultation site visits to salons in
the Bay Area.

Ventilation & Safety issues in Salons
– how to encourage this without
regulation? Is considering getting
the Industry to underwrite some of
this an option we would want to
explore?
