VII. Reading Comprehension
Read the following article and choose the correct answer to each question or statement.
Pay It Forward
For most people, it is natural to return a favor after they have received help from others. Yet, not many people know that there is actually much more they can do
─ they can “pay it forward.” The phrase means “to return a favor by helping out other people.” It has existed ( 存在
) for a long time and been mentioned in the works of famous writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson. In 2000, more people learned about this idea through the movie Pay It Forward , which was based on Catherine Ryan
Hyde’s novel.
In the movie, Eugene Simonet, a social studies teacher, gave all of his students a special assignment. He asked them to think of a way to change the world. While most students didn’t take the assignment seriously, a boy named Trevor did. He came up with a plan called “Pay It Forward.” The main idea was to help three people, who then had to help three others instead of returning the favors they had received. Trevor believed that if enough people did this, the world would change eventually.
Trevor then started by helping a homeless man. Later, he set up a dinner date for
Eugene and his mother, hoping that the two would fall in love with each other. The results of his efforts all appeared disappointing to him in the beginning. However, the idea of “paying it forward” did spread gradually. At the end of the story, even though
Trevor was killed while trying to protect a friend, his plan had influenced more people than he could have ever imagined.
In real life, both the novel and the movie have inspired many people. For instance, there is a “Pay It Forward Foundation” in the United States. Similar foundations have also been set up in England and Australia. Usually, when something happens in the movies, people say, “It was just a movie.” However, these foundations put the great idea into practice and are truly making a difference in the real world.
