INTERNAL MEMORANDUM To: All ELSU Instructor Colleagues From: Mokhtar Aftat, Language Instructor Subject: New English Placement Test Date: February 15, 2003 Dear Colleagues, As you know, I have been working on a new placement test, and it is ready for your comments. Also, you probably know that this test has been piloted, and the results were very encouraging. The listening part of the test is the same test written by Jack Richards. I felt there was no need for a new listening test since Richards’ test is very good and is based on the New Interchange books that we are using. The grammar/reading/writing test, however, is an entirely new test and is also totally based on New Interchange. I felt it necessary to type the listening test to provide an easy-to-follow layout, which is missing in the original test. If you need to listen to the tape, please contact me. As you can see, this is Form A of the new placement test. It would be a good idea to have another version, which I plan to work on in the future. You are probably wondering why a new placement test is needed. I feel that the SLEP test is unsuitable for the following reasons. 1. The major problem with the SLEP test is that it does not discriminate between all levels. The lower levels are not tested. The SLEP test starts at about our Level 4. 2. Another serious drawback with that test is its cultural content. SLEP contains a great deal of culturally unsuitable materials that render performance difficult. Examples of these are American history: articles of the Confederation, the Constitution, etc. In the SLEP Test Manual, it is stated that “knowledge of specific subject matter is not tested” (p. 8, top left). This is fine. However, its existence in the test affects the examinees’ comprehension and, therefore, their ability to choose an answer. The SLEP test was designed to measure ESL American high school students’ ability to read in English and understand spoken English, skills required in their classes of science, biology, history, and so forth. Their goals are, then, clearly different from our goals at the IOB in Saudi Arabia. 3. The SLEP test does not test students’ writing abilities. In my view, a placement test based mainly on grammar, which is discrete-point testing, is not necessarily indicative of language proficiency. Among other problems, the guess factor in such a multiple choice test is clearly a problem. This type of testing assesses one particular segment of English at a time. While it is practical, it alone is not enough to tap global competence, which we should be doing. This is why adding the writing component to any English placement test is necessary. A writing test is highly integrative and communicative because a complex of skills are tested at the same time and the examinee is required to demonstrate his ability (or lack of it) to communicate in a stretch of meaningful discourse. This is an opportunity he does not have in the discrete-point, multiple choice grammar test. 4. The SLEP listening part is too long. 5. The directions are too difficult and the illustrations are often of a poor quality. Thank you in advance for your feedback which is much appreciated. If you don’t know the answer to a question, move on to the next question. DO NOT GUESS THE ANSWER. (Please emphasize this and tell them that guessing will lead to an inaccurate placement.) Don’t look at anyone else’s paper. Turn off all mobile phones. Do you have any questions so far? DISTRIBUTE THE TEST BOOKLETS AND ANSWER BOOKLETS. TELL THE STUDENTS: Write your name, organization, and date on the cover page of your answer booklet. DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING IN THE TEST BOOKLETS!!! (Make sure the lower levels understand. Speak to them in Arabic. An Arabic speaker should be in the classroom to give them any additional directions in Arabic.) Read the general directions on page 2 of the test booklet. Don’t go to page 3 and don’t survey the test yet. (Give them enough time to read the general directions.) Do you have any questions now? (Survey the whole test booklet with the candidates, making sure that they see the different sections and understand the directions. Since directions are in Arabic, problems of comprehension should not arise. Then survey the answer booklet with them, making sure they understand how to use it.) You can start the test now on page 3. Consider what happened to Bob Wilson, for example. For years, Bobby, as his mother calls him, was the most unpopular man in his company. Nobody ever invited him home for dinner. Nobody even sent him a Christmas card except his aunt Agatha. In the company cafeteria, he was never asked to join the other salesmen who laughed loudly and told jokes. Even his secretary seemed to avoid him. She spoke to him as little as possible: “Yes, Sir,” “No, Sir,” and “A call for you on line 3” was the extent of their communication. Last month, however, everything changed. About the time that aunt Agatha died, Bobby bought a bottle of aftershave lotion. It was rather expensive, but with the half a million dollars his aunt left him in her will, he could afford it. After that, his life changed. Today he is like a new man. The secretaries in the main office smile and wave at him. He never sits alone in the cafeteria; in fact, he is usually surrounded by people. The advertisement for Bobby’s aftershave lotion says: Try Miracle It’s guaranteed to change your life. It certainly changed Bobby’s life. Maybe you should try it. It might change yours. 5. Bobby didn’t use Miracle aftershave before last month. a. This is true. b. This is false. c. The story doesn’t give enough information for me to decide. 6. Bobby got the money from ___. a. a bank b. his aunt who died c. his company 7. Recently they returned to the United States and experienced something called reverse culture shock. They had lived abroad for a very long time, and everything back home was new for them. The cars seemed so big, and the people did too. Sandy and Victor had forgotten how many overweight Americans there were. But everyone was obsessed with dieting; people thought about it all the time. Every magazine seemed to have an article about dieting, but not many people seemed disciplined enough to follow a diet. Most were disappointed dieters. When Sandy and Victor had first arrived in Saudi Arabia, it was surprising to see the Arab women covered from head to toe. Sandy was equally shocked when she returned to the USA and saw women wearing hair rollers in public. And both Sandy and Victor were frustrated because they didn’t have a car. When they lived abroad, transportation had never been a problem, but the North American city that they lived in had very poor public transportation. Sometimes the couple had to wait an hour for the bus. It was very annoying. And the bus stop was almost a mile from the apartment, so they had to walk a lot, too. At the end of the day, they were exhausted. It’s difficult to return home after being in another country for a while. At first, Sandy and Victor were worried that they had a negative attitude about everything, but they felt relieved to hear about reverse culture shock. It will take time for them to feel comfortable living here again. 9. In all the countries where they lived, Sandy and Victor ___. a. never suffered from culture shock b. suffered from culture shock once c. suffered from culture shock twice d. suffered from culture shock three times 10. Sandy and Victor experienced reverse culture shock in ___. a. both Saudi Arabia and the Far East b. Saudi Arabia c. the Far East d. the USA 11.
