1.1 A glance to the city of Rome

It’s hard to say what you can find most breathtaking about the Eternal City – the
opulence of the Vatican, the timelessness of the Forum and of the Colosseum or the
modernity of Renzo Piano’s Auditorium. Rome has unarguably the richest history of any

1.3 National ranking
According to the ranking made by the Italian Ministry of Education (2012), our
University is considered the fifth in Italy for merit. It is also the best University in the
centre and south area of our nation. These are the three benchmarks considered
essential for the required quality:

In recent years the University of Tor Vergata has included programs entirely taught in
English in its training of international degree, whose quality is guaranteed by the

ranking of the Italian Universities (2012) for the number of courses taught in English.

The University Hospital, the flagship of the university, is equipped with the latest
diagnostic and therapeutic structures and has become a reference model at national

Tor Vergata is extremely active in promoting international projects of research. The
University amount to 99 projects recognized worldwide, especially in Europe.
Our recent best result (2011), which makes us very proud, is to be the unique Italian
University which has received international finances from the European Community for
the ERC IDEAS program. The satisfying number is of 5 approved projects, dealing with
original ideas and new approaches in the field of research. Three of them have been
elaborated by our Department of Mathematics which is nowadays well-known as one
of the most honourable in Europe, one project by the Department of Physics and the
last one by the Department of Engineering.
1.4 History
Tor Vergata University, established in 1982, is located in the
south-eastern part of Rome in a 600 hectare campus far from
the hectic city centre, which has allowed the university to
expand and develop over the years. It is easily reached by
public transportation, either by bus or underground.
As one of the largest research based institutions in Italy, Tor
Vergata University is an international centre for research and
education and it is well known for scientific studies. In recent
years, it has played an increasingly important role in the
activity of technology transfer and cooperation with public and
private organisations in various fields.

The university of Rome “Tor Vergata” has a University Residence inside the Campus,
where Italian and International students can live. The residence provides flats with

2. STUDYING AT TOR VERGATA
2.1 The Italian university system
The Italian university system is divided into three cycles:
 The first cycle (Laurea-LA) takes 3 years for a total of 180 ECTS.
It leads to a Bachelor equivalent degree.
 The second cycle (Laurea Specialistica/ Laurea Magistrale-LS) takes 2 years for
a total of 120 ECTS. It leads to a Master equivalent degree.
 The third cycle (Dottorato or Perfezionamento) takes 3 years for a total of 180
ECTS. It leads to a PhD equivalent.
In addition to the first cycle, the Italian system provides a 1 OR 2 year course (60 ECTS)
leading to a first level Specialization Masters (MA). In addition to the second cycle, the
Italian system provides a 1 or 2 years course (60/120 ECTS) leading to a second level
Specialization Masters (MA).

2.6 What to do upon arrival

3.1 VISA procedures
In order to get the VISA to enter Italy, you have to go to the Italian Embassy/Consulate
in your Country and ask for the VISA. Please, refer to the information they will give you
about the documents you need to attach to your Visa application.

One of the document you will surely need if you apply for a study-visa is a “letter of
invitation” from Tor Vergata University.
If you are an exchange student, the International Relations Office is going to send the
letter directly to you or to your Home University.

4.
ARRIVAL IN ROME
4.1 How to reach Tor Vergata
Step 1) Your arrival could be through:
● “Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport” also known as “Fiumicino International
Airport”, is Italy's largest airport, it is only 32 km away from the centre of Rome and you
can reach the centre of the city by train, taxi or getting special shuttle transfers.
● “G.B. Pastine Roma Ciampino Airport” is situated in Via Appia Nuova, 15 km from the
centre of Rome. It is a short distance from the Rome city ring road (GRA) and offers all
the means of transport to get to the capital.
Both airports are connected with the city centre and give you the opportunity to get
the metro line you need to reach Tor Vergata University.
Step 2) Subway: Line “A” direction Anagnina and get off at Anagnina Station.

Step 3) Take Line 20 Express to reach the faculty of Science, Economics, Engineering,
Humanities, Medicine and Surgery
or Line 500 to reach the Rectorate, Administration offices, Faculty of Law , Faculty of
Sciences and Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.
4.2 How to reach the International Relations Office
The office can be easily reached from Anagnina Underground station (terminal Line A)
by bus 500 (Facoltà di Giurisprudenza/Rettorato stop).
4.3 Residence permit
Residence permit is required by law if your stay in Italy is longer than 90 days. Within 8
days from arrival, all non-Eu citizens who hold a study visa for Italy must apply for a
stay permit for study purposes.
The stay permit is issued by the local police station (Questura - Ufficio Stranieri) but
according to the most recent regulation application, now it can be delivered to
authorized Post Offices.
The Post Officer will identify you; you will then have to pay € 27,50 (paid through postal
money transfer - bollettino postale) for the issuing of the electronic version of the
document and € 30,00 for the service (to be paid directly to the Post officer). According
to the length of your stay in Italy, you will have to pay a minimum of € 80 to a
maximum of € 200.
The Post office will leave you a receipt of the Stay permit application.
Anyway the stay permit is issued against presentation of:

proof of enough financial means to support yourself
a document giving evidence of your right to medical care in Italy (go to 4.5
Health Insurance).

4.4 How to obtain an Italian Fiscal Code
The Italian Fiscal Code is a personal code that identifies each person within the Italian
State. You need it to open a bank account, or to get a cellular phone. To obtain the tax

code you need to complete a request form and apply to the “Agenzia delle Entrate”
with a valid identity document (ex: passport, stay permit, visa). The tax code is usually
issued immediately.

4.5 How to get health insurance
National health insurance in Italy is managed by the National Health Service (Servizio
Sanitario Nazionale, SSN).
Registration is handled at a local level by the Local Health Service (Azienda Sanitaria
Locale, ASL) which issues a social security number and a health card (Tessera Sanitaria).
This entitles the holder to low or no-cost treatment. Hospital services are provided free
and a 75 percent reduction is given on the cost of outpatient and some dental
treatment.

4.6 How to open a bank account
If you need to open a bank account you should go to one of the local banks at your

4.7 Erasmus in Campus
The association “Erasmus in Campus” has been established for providing services of
accommodation and support for all the international students living in Rome. The
association team, composed of ex-Erasmus students, is active from 2005 in order to
facilitate the integration of students in the urban and university context, paying

5.4 Events and entertainment
