Funding Criteria The Riverside Church is interdenominational and a member of the American Baptist Churches in the USA and the United Church of Christ, and cooperates with the Council of Churches in the City of New York, and with the New York State, National and World Councils of Churches. The Sharing Fund of The Riverside Church welcomes proposals from denominational projects as well as others. I. All request for Sharing Fund grants should: a) reflect the mission of The Riverside Church; b) affirm the worldwide and ecumenical concern for justice, peace and the integrity of creation; c) provide services and/or effective advocacy for under served and marginalized populations, including but not limited to: those adversely affected by racism, homophobia, sexism, ageism the chronically ill women and children the elderly those suffering the consequences of ethnic violence refugees and internally displaced persons victims of natural disaster prisoners those experiencing the effects of economic hardship, e.g. hunger, homelessness; d) II. benefit the target population without regard to religious affiliation. Preference is given to projects where: a) the beneficiaries themselves design and implement the project; b) the group requesting funds exhibits the knowledge and expertise needed to accomplish its goals; c) the project outcome or organization maximizes local resources to benefit the greatest number of people; d) the funding base of the project or organization is substantial enough to ensure goals are met, but not so large that Riverside’s contribution of up to $5,000 has little impact. III. The Sharing Fund provides general operating support and project support. With respect to project support, The Sharing Fund prefers NOT to fund: administrative salaries, benefits & expenses (not connected with program expenses), utilities, rent, and insurance. Capital expenditures are considered only when integral to the specific goal of the project. IV. Criteria for projects applying for funds to assist American Indian Youth (from the Densford Fund) a) Projects must provide “educational opportunities for American Indian young people, or for young people of American Indian ancestry, so long as such need exists.” (Densford) b) The “Youth” is interpreted as American Indian adolescents and young adults in their early twenties. c) The above criteria in I and II (with the exception of Ic) also apply to grants from the Densford Fund.
