The course provides students with knowledge and skills in order to formulate specific purpose statements, analyze and adapt to audiences, organize ideas and construct outlines, assess evidence and reasoning, and use language effectively. It is hoped that by the end of the semester students will be able to walk away with the knowledge, awareness, and techniques that will enable them to effectively inform and/or persuade others, especially in a formal, public setting. Course Objectives: After completing the course, students should be able to: Explain the nature of public speaking as a communication process. Provide guidelines for ethical speaking and listening. Carry out all the necessary steps in preparing for a public speech: choose a topic, analyze the audience, prepare materials to support ideas, organize the speech, and outline the speech. If for some very good reason (i.e., sickness or emergency) you are unable to attend a class, please try to notify the instructor by email. For unexcused absences, students are responsible for making up missed information and assignments. Students are expected to actively participate while in class. Whether the lessons are successful or not depends on a great extent on the amount of care and effort students put into the discussions and their assignments. . Students are expected to read assigned chapters before class. Reading assignments must be submitted by the specified due dates. This class aims to establish and maintain a positive learning environment based upon communication and mutual respect.
