NROTC Scholarships – The Navy has a limited number of qualified nurse applicants for the fouryear, $180,000 scholarship. Seniors interested in pursuing a career in the Nursing field and have SAT scores of 530 (Critical Reading) and 520 (Math) or ACT scores of 22 on English and 21 on Math are encouraged to apply for these scholarships. The Society of Women Engineers at UVA is inviting female junior and senior high school students to spend a week-end exploring majors and careers in engineering on February 23-24 as part of Engineering Open House. The cost for the weekend is $45 which covers all activity fees, meals, and accommodations. Applications are in the Career Center and are due by January 31, 2008. Students must write a brief statement outlining their interests and the expectations for the week-end. Girls should have a strong interest in math and/or science and considering the possibility of a career in engineering. The Virginia Tech Student Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers will sponsor "Engineering Perspectives Conference: Encouraging Progress through Diversity" on Saturday, February 23, 2008. This is a one-day conference designed to encourage diversity in engineering by focusing on opportunities for women and minorities in industry. This year the event is open to all high school students interested in a career in engineering. The conference is $10 per family with breakfast, lunch, and refreshments provided. Qualified seniors can submit Part B of the application to be considred for a scholarship (minimum $500 award). The scholarship will be awarded to a senior upon entrance into the College of Engineering program at Virginia Tech. Applications are available in the Career Center. The deadline is January 20, 2008. Girls between the ages of 14-17 who volunteer in the community or school can enter the Violet Richardson Award. Four $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students who plan to major in education. Students must submit an application (available in the Career Center), essay, two letters of recommendation, a transcript with college board test scores, and a picture. The deadline is February 15, 2008. The Ronald McDonald House Charities has four individual scholarship programs in the amounts of $1,000 for students applying to two or four-year colleges. Applicants must be U.S. The scholarships are: RMHC/ASIA, RMHC/African American Future Achievers, RMHC-HACER (Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources), and RMHC Scholars. Applications are in the Career Center or you can download an application at www.rmhc.org. Students must complete application, transcript and college board test scores, do a personal statement, recommendation letter, and submit a copy of the parents’ 2006 or 2007 IRS Form 1040. Applications must be postmarked by February 15, 2008. VSGA Scholarship Program of the Virginia Golf Foundation was founded to help students with an interest in golf attend college inVirginia. Students must submit a transcript with SAT/ACT scores, 3 references, essay, application (available in the Career Center), and a letter from a representative of a VSGA member club recommending the student for consideration for this scholarship. The deadline is February 29, 2008. The Army Engineer Memorial Award is provided by the Army Engineer Officers’ Wives’ Club and awarded to students who plan to continue their education at an accredited college, university, technical or vocational school to honor all Engineer officers who died in the line of duty. Morris Award is available to students to plan to enroll in a program leading to a nursing degree of certification. This renewable award is based on GPA, and full-time enrollment in a nursing program. Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation for children of a Marine who plans to attend college or vocational/trade school. The 2007 family income must be $77,000 or less. The deadline is March 3, 2008. Naval Officers’ Wives’ Club of Washington, D.C. These merit scholarships are offered to dependent children of active duty, retired, or deceased Navy service members. Historically, the amount of the scholarships has been $2,000 per recipient. Students must plan to attend a two or four-year college, a visual or performing arts school, or a vocational/technical school and are a U.S. citizen and possess a valid military dependent identification card. Applications are available in the Career Center. Applications must be received by the scholarship organization by March 28, 2008. The Blacks in Government Coast Guard Headquarters Chapter Scholarship Program offers a $1,000 to each of our high schools in PW County. Students must have at least a 2.0 grade point average and complete an essay, transcript and provide two recommendations. Applications are in the Career Center. The deadline is March 31, 2008. The Quantico Chapter of the National Naval Officers Association Dollars for Scholars offers scholarships in various amounts. AXA Achievement Scholarship Program in association with U.S. News & World Report. $10,000 will be awarded to 52 students (one in each state, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico). $15,000 additional scholarships will be awarded to 10 national recipients. Winners include, but are not limited to, demonstrated: ability to achieve in college, ambition, drive and dedication, commitment to succeed and respect for self, family and community. United States JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship Program. Each year $1,000 grants are awarded graduating high school seniors who plan to continue their education at accredited post-secondary colleges, universities or vocational schools. The Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student Competition offers 500 four-year scholarships, ranging from $1,000 per year to $15,000 per year to seniors based on financial need, leadership, and scholarship. The Legacy Awards are one-year merit-based scholarships for children and grandchildren of Elks who are members in good standing. The McKelvey Foundation awards $40,000 in scholarships for young entrepreneurs. Students must own and operate a business for at least one year (non profits are okay). Micron Technology Foundation, Inc. has $150,000 in renewable scholarships to students who have demonstrated excellence in academics and leadership. Students must have a combined Critical Reading or Writing and Math SAT score of at least 1350 or a composite ACT score of at least 30, have a 3.5 grade point average or higher, plan to major in Engineering (electrical, chemical, material science, or mechanical), physics, or chemistry and have demonstrated leadership in school, work, and/or extracurricular activities. Seniors must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5, work part-time an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year, are actively involved in community service activities, demonstrate financial need, and plan to enroll in an accredited two/four-year college or vocational/technical school. This scholarship is for students who choose to pursue a college cooperative education program. Students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or better. Visit www.co-op.edu to apply and receive more information. The deadline is February 15, 2008. NVTA (Northern VA Theater Alliance) has two $1,000 scholarships. One scholarship will be awarded in theater performance and one in technical theatre to high school seniors. Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, submit one letter of recommendation as specified in the application, as well as several other selection criteria components. Applications are available in the Career Center. Applications (including a picture) must be postmarked no later than February 16, 2008. The Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Virginia will award four $3,000 scholarships to seniors who have been admitted to a fouryear college or university in Virginia. Students must write an essay about a historical document that played an important role in the establishment of our nation. This year’s topic is “The Declaration of Independence”. Applications are in the Career Center. The deadline is February 22, 2008. Johnson & Wales University National High School Chef of the Year-Step Up to the Plate. More than $600,000 in scholarships will be awarded to this year’s Chef of the Year winners. Your entry would win a full scholarship to Johnson & Wales University, the worldrenowned culinary school. American Legion High School Oratorical Contest: Students demonstrate their knowledge of the U.S. Constitution and its applications as well as their oratorical skills. The deadline is March 3, 2008. Montclair Lions Club William Alan Chapman Senior Memorial Scholarship. Two scholarships in the amounts of $2,000 and $1,500 will be awarded to recognize the local community service efforts of graduating seniors residing in the Montclair and surrounding area. To apply, students must complete the required application, obtain two letters of recommendation, and write a 400-word essay on the topic “The Importance of Community Service at the High School Level.” An interview may also be required. Effie Lee Nelson Speiden Scholarship sponsored by the Manassas Chapter, Virginia Division United Daughters of the Confederacy. A one-time $1,500 scholarship is available to a young woman attending a Virginia college. The General and Virginia Division Scholarship programs offer several multi-year scholarships. Applications for the Effie Lee Nelson Speiden Scholarship are available in the Career Center. The Gloria Wille Bell and Carlos R. Bell Scholarship Program for the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan. During their lifetimes. Gloria Wille Bell and Carlos R. Bell, long time residents of Gloucester County, Virginia, created a trust fund to provide scholarship support to help students pursuing degrees in engineering, math, physics, computer science or another related scientific filed at the University of Michigan. The scholarship support is based on academic achievement rather than financial need. The program will provide $80,000 over four years of undergraduate study to students selected from Virginia, with a preference given to residents of the Gloucester, VA area. College Specific Scholarships The following schools have sent information about scholarship opportunities: Virginia Tech Pamplin Scholars Program consists of two scholarships: the Pamplin Leader Award and the Pamplin Scholar Award. The Pamplin Leader Award is a one year academic merit-based $1,000 scholarship. The award is presented annually to one qualified student from each public high school in Virginia. The Pamplin Scholar Award is chosen from the pool of Pamplin Leader Awardees. A student awarded the Pamplin Leader is automatically qualified to apply for the Pamplin Scholar Award in the fall semester of their first year at VT. Students must have a 3.75 GPA or higher and/or be ranked in the top 10% of his/her class. This award is open to students in all majors. Johnson & Wales University – Chancellor’s Scholarship awards $7,500 to full tuition renewable scholarships for high academic achievers. Students must be accepted into the school’s honors program. Johnson & Wales University – Presidential Scholarship - $5,000 annually. Ohio Wesleyan University – Schimmel Scholarship. This award is for full tuition, room and board to a freshman woman who ranks near the top of her class with honors/advanced classes. Complete school application by February 1 to be assured of consideration for this scholarship. Ohio Wesleyan University – The Phillip J. and Nancy LaPorte Meek Community Service and Leadership Scholarships offers awards ranging from $4,000 to $10,000 to students with an outstanding record of leadership demonstrated through commitment to community service. Ohio Wesleyan University – Helen Crider Smith Women as Leaders Scholarship is a full tuition award to a freshman woman with an outstanding record of academic achievement and demonstrated leadership. The University of Maryland-College Park has dance scholarships for gifted and talented freshman dance majors. LULAC focuses heavily on education and providing more than a million dollars in scholarships to Hispanic students. QuestBridge is an online college match website. The College Match program pairs high achieving, low-income students with admission and full scholarships to their partner schools, including Amherst College, Columbia University, Princeton University, Rice University, Stanford University, Swarthmore College, and Williams College. Qualified low-income QuestBridge applicants who are not awarded College Match scholarships can apply to their partner colleges for free through the regular admissions process. Northern Virginia Community College Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program (VGAP) covers the cost of tuition, fees and $500 for books for eligible students. Eligibility: must be a VA resident admitted full-time enrollment in a diploma, certificate, or degree program at a public institution in VA. Have graduated for a Virginia high school and have a minimum 2.5 grade point average and be classified as a dependent for federal financial aid purposes. Priority is given to students who file an application for financial aid at NVCC by June 1st. Complete the FASFA form at www.fafsa.ed.gov . The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is an alternative test from the SAT and ACT for students whose native language is not English.
