MOTIVATING
STUDENTS/ANTICIPATORY SET
As the students are entering class, have the song “Rocky Top” playing through a computer/speakers. When the students
have settled into their seats, say good morning and ask how their day is going. After this ask them to name the song that
was playing as they entered class. After this, ask the students what state this song is talking about. Explain to your
students that for today (possibly the next few days) we will be talking about Tennessee and its musical heritage.
INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES

Step-by-Step Procedures-Lesson Sequence: Basic to Complex. Lesson includes
visuals, modeling, logical sequencing and segmenting (beginning, middle, ending);

Display a map of the state of Tennessee
Explain that there are three divisions of Tennessee (West, Middle, East)
Tell the students that each of the divisions has very unique qualities that make it different from the other parts.
Explain that each region of Tennessee has different physical characteristics.
Show an example of an elevation map of Tennessee
Explain that West TN is generally flat, Middle TN has more hills, and East TN has several mountains (mention the
Smokey Mountains)
Show pictures examples of each region.
Begin talking about West TN.
State that West TN is where we live! (Point out Martin on the map)
State that West TN is also home to the city of Memphis, the biggest city in the state.
Explain that Memphis is the home of the delta blues, on the Mississippi Delta
Explain that Memphis quickly became a staple in American music and helped lead to the birth of Rock and Roll
Ask the students if they have ever heard of Elvis Presley.
Tell the students that Elvis spent most of his life in Memphis at Graceland.
Play a video of Elvis performing “Hound Dog” (play only the first verse)
Call and response the lyrics to the first verse of “Hound Dog”
Sing the song “Hound Dog” with the class and accompany the class on guitar.
Ask the class to perform the song without you singing.
Move on to Middle TN
Explain that Middle TN is home to Nashville, the state capital
Explain that Nashville is also considered the birthplace of country music.
The Grand Ole Opry started in 1925 as a weekly broadcast and has grown into the home of country music. Show
a picture of the Grand Ole Opry
Performers range from Hank Williams to Patsy Cline to Johnny Cash to Brad Paisley
Play “Wagon Wheel” by Old Crow Medicine Show video from the Grand Ole Opry
Ask how the students how this song is different from “Hound Dog” by Elvis Presley
Explain that “Wagon Wheel” features a few more acoustic instruments (but make sure the students know
electric instruments can be used!)
Teach the chorus to wagon wheel by rote, call and response.
Sing and play “Wagon Wheel” with your students
Only play accompaniment to “Wagon Wheel”
Move on to East TN
Remind the students that East TN has several mountains.
Point out that Knoxville and Chattanooga are the biggest cities in East TN.
Tell the students that the mountains of East TN are home to a lot of great bluegrass music
Play “Rocky Top” by The Osbourne Brothers.
Tell the students that this song is talking about a city on a mountain outside of Knoxville “Rocky Top”
Explain that bluegrass is typically performed only on acoustic instruments.
Question the students for review over the three grand divisions of Tennessee.

ASSESSMENT
Formative and/or summative assessment. A variety of assessments, including

Formative assessment will be taken throughout each class period on pitch accuracy through the singing and
participation.
Summative assessment will be taken through the use of a worksheet assignment for homework covering
everything discussed through the three grand divisions of Tennessee.
Reflection/Wrap Up. Summarizing, reminding, reflecting, restarting, connecting.
CLOSURE
Question the students to review what was covered in each class session. Pass out a worksheet with a map of
Tennessee that requires filling in cities, elevations, and musical characteristics that will be due at the beginning
of the next class period. Tell the students that Tennessee is a beautiful state with a very rich musical
background.
