Pre-AP Biology Spring Field Trip Criteria There are two field trip opportunities coming up this six weeks To qualify for either or both, the student must have a cumulative average for the year (through the 5 th six weeks) of 85 or higher and complete the essay requirements for each listed below. If you complete the essay and meet the academic criteria, you will also need to fill out a permission slip, a copy of which you will find on my web page. Field Trip #1: Tuesday, May 10 U.T. Health Science Center – San Antonio The purpose of this trip is to expose students to the study of the medical and biomedical sciences. In conjunction with our final unit of study of the year, we will be given a tour of the science center and given presentations on biomedical research. We will also be conducting a hands-on anatomy and physiology lab similar to those conducted at the college level. The trip will run from 10 am until noon. Further details on times and fees will be disseminated prior to the trip. Essay assignment: Discuss in at least 500 words the importance of biomedical research to society. Essay should be dropped into the Gaggle homework drop box labeled UTHSCA Field Trip by midnight, May 2. No late entries will be considered, as the drop box will close at the timelisted. Field Trip #2: Date TBD Aquarena Center, Texas State University – San Marcos The purpose of this trip is to give students a concrete background in understanding the impact of exotic species on diverse ecosystems, endangered plants and animals and the effect of pollution on a habitat. Students will conduct macroinvertibrate testing on Aquarena property and at an alternate location down river. Fees and times for this trip will determined upon finalization of the date of the trip. Essay assignment: In at least 500 words, distinguish between littoral, limnetic and profundal zones with regard to freshwater ecosystems and the effects of ground water contamination on each.
