Here are some tips for writing an effective paper. Here is what we want for vocabulary: 1. Complete sentences 2. Spell and grammar checked 3. The definition . . . 4. And why it matters to us and/or the field? What is cool about these terms? Here is our writing rubric: Content—your response must demonstrate knowledge of the field, text, theory, etc. Your reply should have enough depth and detail to make your point clearly. Organization- Your paper needs to be logically structure (beginning, middle and ending), user friendly and easy to follow and access information. Mechanics- The paper needs to be spell and grammar checked and free from editing mistakes or use of language (style) that would obscure your meaning. Editing ideas: 1. Double-space all graduate papers. 2. Indicate the assignment, class, date, instructor and course. Repeat a question before your reply is given. 3. Vary your sentence structure. 4. Use the grammar and spell checker built in to Word before submitting your assignment. 5. Use the writing center, tutor/coach for help with papers 1 6. Have someone review your paper—you can return the favor to them in peer reviews. 7. Read your paper aloud. Does it make sense to you? Are your sentences so long or complex that you run out of breath reading them and nearly collapse? Try to keep sentences on one major topic. 8. Use APA style (you might as well get used to it since you will have to use it sooner or later). 9. Cite supporting works and put them in a reference section at the end. APA Reference example: APA format: McBurney, D.H. and White, T.L. (2006). Research methods. (7th ed.). Wadsworth Publishers. 10.
