Cape Colony, to have the treaty confirmed. On his return he moved his
mission to an area north of the Tugela, where he was visited by Piet Retief.

Le Vaillant (1753-1824) was a traveller, ornithologist, artist and writer. His
TRAVELS provides an interesting account of South Africa at a time when
relatively little was known regarding its natural history and the Dutch settlers,
valuable less for its geographical information than for its addition to the
knowledge of the natural history of the area. D.S.A.B. vol. 2, p. 396-399.
Mendelssohn vol. 1, p. 889-893 and S.A.B. vol. 3, p. 100-102. Superb
reproduction of Le Vaillant's work, including commentaries by leading
academics in their fields. Le Vaillant studied the natural history collections in
Paris and then decided to travel into the interior of Africa in order to observe
the specimens in their native habitats.
