VFACTS INDUSTRY SUMMARY - May 2013 The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries issues the following summary for the retail sales performance of the automotive industry for May 2013. Key Points: The May 2013 market of 96,788 new vehicle sales is an increase of 719 vehicle sales or 0.7% on May 2012 (96,069 vehicle sales). May 2013 (27.0) had 0.2 more selling days as May 2012, resulting in the same number of vehicle sales per day of 3,584. The May 2013 industry volume is up 11,671 (12.6%) on April 2013 (85,117 vehicles). In seasonally adjusted terms the May monthly volume equates to a 5.1% increase versus April. The Passenger Vehicle Market is down by 1,519 vehicle sales (-3.1%) over the same month last year: the Sports Utility Market is up by 2,134 vehicle sales (7.9%). The Light Commercial Market is down by 165 vehicle sales (-0.9%), and the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market is up by 269 vehicle sales (10.3%) versus May 2012. Toyota was market leader in May followed by Holden, and Mazda. Toyota leads Holden with a margin of 10,710 vehicle sales, or 11 market share points. YEAR TO DATE RESULTS The year-to-date 2013 market of 454,953 vehicles is running 19,665 vehicle sales or 4.5% ahead of the same period in 2012. This equates to a YTD SAAR of 1.129 million vehicles. There were 0.2 additional selling days compared to May 2012, resulting in the daily selling rate equal to 2012 levels (3,584). The Passenger Market at 223,577 vehicles is down by 4,675 vehicle sales (-2.0%). This equates to a YTD SAAR of 0.552 million vehicles. Mixed results by segment were evident with the Light car segment, up 1,142 (2.1%); the Sports car segment, up 2,972 (36.4%); the Small car segment, up 4,345 (4.3%) and the Upper Large segment, up 723 (81.3%), whilst the Medium car segment, down 6,045 (-17.7%); the Large car segment, down 7,009 (-27.5%) and the People Movers segment, down 803 (-19.0%), failing to achieve the 2012 volume levels. The Sports Utility Vehicle Market at 136,141 vehicles is running ahead of the same period in 2012 by 14,076 vehicles (11.5%), in year-to-date terms. This equates to a YTD SAAR of 0.337 million vehicles. Segments contributing positive results were the SUV Small segment, up 4,963 vehicle sales (20.3%); SUV Large up 2,985 (6.2%); the SUV Medium segment, up 6,631 vehicle sales (15.5%). The only segment returning a negative result is the SUV Upper Large segment, down 503 vehicle sales (-7.7%). The Light Commercial Market at 82,874 vehicles is running 9,549 vehicles (13.0%) above the same period in 2012, in year-to-date terms. This equates to a YTD SAAR of 0.208 million vehicles. This gain was driven by the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4x4 segment which is up 10,387 vehicle sales (23.0%), and the Vans/CC <=2.5t, up 36 vehicle sales (2.7%). Segments showing lower results were the Pick-up/Cab Chassis 4X2 segment down 77 vehicle sales (-0.4%). The Light Bus < 20 seats segment, down 237 vehicle sales (-19.8%); the Van/CC 2.5-3.5t segment, down 374 vehicle sales (-5.4%) and the Light Bus => 20 seats segment, down 186 vehicle sales (-39.1%). The Heavy Truck Market at 12,361 vehicles is up on the same period in 2012 by 715 vehicle sales (6.1%). This equates to a YTD SAAR of 0.032 million vehicle sales. MONTHLY RESULTS The Passenger Vehicle Market is down 1,519 vehicle sales or -3.1%. This was driven by losses in the Large car segment, down 1,600 (-29.3%); the Medium car segment, down 631 (-8.7%); the Light car segment down 210 vehicle sales (-1.9%) and the People Movers car segment, down 61 (-7.0%). All other segments showed gains with the Small car segment, up 331 (1.5%); the Sports car segment, up 444 (24.3%); and the Upper Large car segment, up 208 (167.7%) on 2012 volume levels. The Sports Utility Vehicle Market is up 2,134 vehicle sales or 7.9% versus May 2012. Showing a lower result were the SUV Large segment, down 687 vehicle sales(-6.2%) and the SUV Upper Large down 141 vehicle sales (-10.9%). Segments returning improved results were the SUV Medium up 1,935 vehicle sales (20.5%) and the SUV Small segment, up 1,027 vehicle sales (19.6) versus 2012 volume levels. The Light Commercial Market is down 165 vehicle sales or -0.9% versus May 2012. Positive results by the Pick-up/CC 4x4 up 554 (4.8%) and the Van/CC <=2.5t segment up 82 vehicle sales (30.8%) were overshadowed by losses in the Pick-up/CC 4x2 down 637 (-14.0%); Light Buses < 20 seats segment, down 61 vehicle sales (-22.8%); the Vans/CC 2.53.5t segment, down 73 vehicle sales (-5.0%) and the Light Buses => 20 seats segment, down 30 vehicle sales (-39.5%), versus 2012 volume levels. The Heavy Truck Market is up 269 vehicle sales (10.3%), when compared with May 2012. TOP TEN MAKES Toyota retains the top sales position in the May monthly market with 19,003 vehicle sales, ahead of Holden with 8,293 and Mazda third with 8,135 vehicle sales. Toyota, with a market share of 18.5%, holds market leadership in year to date terms. Holden’s May result sees it in second position with a market share of 8.6%, with Mazda in third with a market share of 8.4%. Hyundai, with sales of 8,027 and with a market share of 8.3%, is in fourth position ahead of Ford, with 7.5% market share.
