Cole chooses to forego a trial and opts for Circle Justice, a form of justice that native cultures have practiced for thousands of years. It aims to heal – the victim, the perpetrator, the community. It involves many people gathering for a series of meetings to determine the best possible resolution. Mrs. Matthews: Cole refers to his mother as a Barbie doll – she is well dressed, perfectly coiffed and completely silent when it comes to Cole’s life. She also drinks alcohol in excess and pretends not to notice when Cole’s father beats him. Mr. Matthews: Cole’s father is an abusive alcoholic. He is often angry and tries to deceive the Circle about the type of father he is. Garvey: Cole’s parole officer in Minneapolis. He visits Cole in jail every day and gives him the choice between a trial and Circle Justice. Garvey is a Tlingit Indian and knows about a Circle Justice program in their area. Edwin: A Tlingit elder who has helped prepare the island for Cole’s banishment. He also checks in on him during his time on the island. Peter Driscal: Peter is the victim of Cole’s beating. Peter suffers from long term effects from the beating. He walks with a limp and has trouble speaking. He is terrified of Cole. Mr. and Mrs. Driscal: Peter’s parents hate Cole for what he did to their son. They want Cole punished. Cole’s lawyer Driscals’ lawyer Members of the Circle Rosey Setting – the novel is set in Minneapolis, Minnesota; this is Cole’s hometown. Cole is then taken to Drake, Alaska, which is a Tlingit village near the shore. The island he is banished to is off the coast of Drake.
