Objective:
The post is a joint appointment between the Royal College of Surgeons in IrelandMedical University of Bahrain (RCSI-MUB) and either the Ministry of Health, Bahrain
or the Bahrain Defence Force (BDF)-Royal Medical Service. The responsibilities of
the Professor will include the coordination and delivery of the RCSI-MUB
undergraduate education programme in medicine, development of a research
programme and delivery of clinical medicine services.
The Professor will coordinate the delivery of the curriculum in medicine, as part of an
integrated education approach, in our affiliated teaching hospital King Hamad
University Hospital. (KHUH)
A significant proportion of the introductory clinical programme is delivered in the
RCSI-MUB teaching laboratories. E-learning based programmes are increasingly
utilized. The medical academic staff contribute to research and development in this
area and play an important role in ongoing curriculum development. At postgraduate
level, the medical group will provide basic and higher medical training and participate
in both the organization and implementation of RCSI postgraduate examinations.

Background: Founded in 1784, RCSI is an independent, self-funding academic institution that provides
undergraduate and postgraduate medical and related training to an international market. RCSI
incorporates Schools of Medicine, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Nursing and Healthcare Management. It
has national responsibility for training and accreditation of surgeons in Ireland. The College is a truly
international institution in the provision of medical and surgical education, research, training and hospital
and healthcare management in Africa, and the Middle and Far East. Today more than 60 countries are
represented on its international student body and the RCSI also has a strong international presence with
Medical Schools in both Bahrain and Malaysia. There are about 2,600 students at the RCSI Dublin
campus with an annual intake of over 300 students into its five year undergraduate and four year
graduate medical training programmes in Dublin; 80% of the student cohort are from overseas.
RCSI Bahrain is a constituent university of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and was founded in
2004 under license from the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain. A school of Nursing admitted its
first cohort of students in October 2006. The University also offers postgraduate programmes in
Healthcare Ethics & Law and in Nursing. RCSI Bahrain had its first cohort of 75 graduates – in all the
offered disciplines, in June 2010. Clinical tuition will be provided in the King Hamad University Hospital
(KHUH)and other healthcare facilities.

The main duties relating to the Professorship will include:












Organize programmes of instruction and examination in Medicine for undergraduate and
postgraduate students, in the RCSI-MUB teaching laboratories and affiliated hospitals.
Undertake and encourage research which is aligned with the RCSI research strategy.
Participate in the teaching programme in Medicine.
Participate in the affairs of the University and constituent schools.
Effectively manage academic staff in medicine and hold regular minuted staff meetings.
Prepare annual and other reports as may be required.
Prepare annual budget submissions, and manage the finances in line with the agreed budget.
Implement policies and decisions as determined by the Head of School and the President.
Comply with statutory requirements and implement University regulations in all areas including
health and safety.
Undergo programmes of training and development as may be required from time to time.
Represent the best interests of the University at all times.
Perform such other related duties as may be requested from time to time.
2 Clinical
The Hospital will provide the current level of infrastructure to the Consultant, irrespective of specialty.
The main duties relating to the Consultant Physician will include

To act as Consultant in Medicine at the assigned Hospital(s) and to fulfil the role in line with
accepted international norms.

Participate as part of a team of consultants in the provision of medical services according to
agreed rotas, and to assist in the maintenance and development of those services in accordance
with medical and technical advances.

Participate in local, regional and national QA/QC schemes in medicine.

Participate in meetings at intra-departmental and network level as appropriate, and to assist with
business planning and administration.

Attend and contribute to appropriate medical meetings and case discussions, and to liaise with
clinical colleagues to ensure a high quality diagnostic service.

Participate in the local clinical governance programme, in clinical audit and continuing
professional development.

To agree, in consultation with the Hospital Director, a work plan for performance of designated
duties and to carry these out.

To participate in the affairs of the Hospitals, as determined by Management of the Hospital,
through the Director.

To be involved in teaching in the Hospital.

To encourage and facilitate research within the Hospital.

To foster good relationships between the affiliated Hospital(s) and RCSI-MUB in all matters of
mutual interest.

To play an active role in management where and when required, by virtue of the post.

Specific OPD and ward round commitments will be the subject of further consultation with the
clinical and managerial staff of the hospital upon appointment.

To perform such other related duties as may be requested from time to time.

Private practice, if undertaken, will be within the confines of the affiliated Hospital under the
terms and conditions of the contract agreed between the appointee, RCSI-MUB and the hospital
authority.

3 Reporting structure
As Professor of Medicine, the appointee will report to the Head of the Medical School, and as a
Consultant, the appointee will report to the Hospital Director.
4 The appointment
This is a fixed term appointment to the academic establishment of RCSI-MUB and to the affiliated
Hospital. Time allocation will be notionally split 50/50 between RCSI-MUB and the hospital.

6 Person specification
Candidates for this joint appointment should posses the following:

A Medical Qualification (with appropriate postgraduate qualifications), and be eligible for
registration with the Bahrain authorities to practice medicine in the Kingdom.

A record of international level research.

Teaching experience and knowledge of current issues in medical education.

