PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Dr. William Nicoll is a Professor in the Department of Counselor Educator, College of Education, Florida Atlantic
University. Dr Nicoll formerly served as Department Chair on the main campus in Boca Raton and is now involved
in the development and implementation of an innovative graduate counseling program (online and modular courses)
for FAU’s new, north campus on Florida’s Treasure Coast. Among his accomplishments while serving as
Department Chair, Dr. Nicoll designed and obtained approval for the new Ph.D. program in Counselor Education,
created an in-house community counseling center, aligned the department’s curriculum to obtain national
accreditation (CACREP, approved 2005), established the Rehabilitation Counseling program track, established
several international collaboration agreements, and was directly responsible for bringing in approximately $2
million in training and research grant funds for the department.
Dr. Nicoll received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Arizona, M.Ed. from Boston University and B.A. from
the University of New Hampshire. Dr. Nicoll’s professional background includes working as a therapist specializing
in individual and family therapy with experience in community agency, correctional and private practice settings.
He served for many years as the national trainer in Brief Counseling and Therapy for the American Counseling
Association’s national professional development program. Dr. Nicoll‘s professional background in education
includes serving as a classroom teacher, special education teacher (EH and LD), school counselor/school
psychologist and teacher association president (international school). He has worked in both U.S. public schools
and international schools. Dr. Nicoll also serves as Director of the Adlerian Training Institute, Inc. which provides
professional development programs for both mental health and education professionals in locations around the
world. He also provides Parent Coaching and Effective Parenting Seminars as well as consulting, training and
supervision services for educators and counselors worldwide. He is a past vice-president of the North American
Society of Adlerian Psychology and past- president of the Ohio Counseling Association. Dr. Nicoll also serves as a
consultant and trainer for the U.S. Dept of State Office of Overseas Schools helping parents, students and teachers
cope with issues faced by international families in the successful adaptation to the international lifestyle and its
unique stressors.
Dr. Nicoll is internationally known for his work in the areas of brief counseling and therapy, family counseling,
developing resilient youth, bullying preventions, and characteristics of effective school, classroom and family
environments. He has trained professionals throughout the world in the skills of brief counseling and therapy,
family therapy, positive classroom behavior management, bullying and social aggression, strategies for improving
home/school collaboration, fostering resilience/social competence in youth, and creating healthy, effective and
supportive home, classroom and school environments. He has served in a variety of leadership positions in the
counseling and education fields at the local, state, national and international levels. Dr Nicoll is the author of
numerous articles and book chapters in professional journals and texts.
Dr. Bill Nicoll is a well known speaker and consultant to mental health professionals, educators, and parents around
the world. He has presented over 400 lectures and workshops throughout North America and in numerous countries
throughout Africa, S. America, Asia and Europe. He has been involved with several international projects including
the establishment of the first training program in school & family counseling services in Russia, educational
exchange programs with several foreign universities, and coordinating professional development programs for
educators and counselors nationally and internationally. Dr. Nicoll has received several professional honors
including those for Outstanding Graduate Teaching, Distinguished Professional Service, NASAP President’s Award
for professional achievement, FAU Faculty induction to Phi Kappa Phi, and was awarded the title of Honored
Professor by St. Petersburg State University of Pedagogical Arts, Russia.
