Pre-Nursing Requirements
Applicants to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program must
complete 90 credits of prerequisites and electives. These requirements
establish the mathematics and life sciences background for success in
nursing courses, provide general education in humanities and social
sciences, and develop good writing skills. All prerequisites and electives
must be completed before beginning the BSN program; not all need to be
completed at the time of application.

Applications are due January 15 for admission the following autumn.
Applications and detailed directions are available on the School of Nursing
website at http://www.son.washington.edu. Transfer students should
also submit a general transfer application to the University and must be
accepted to both the University and the nursing program.
Admission is highly competitive. Applicants must have completed three of
the Natural World prerequisites with a cum g.p.a of 3.0 or four with a
cum g.p.a of 2.8. An overall g.p.a of 2.0 is required in all college work. The
average for each entering class is usually about 3.4. A minimum of 100
hours of volunteer or paid health care experience, particularly with nurses
and patients, is required. However, 400+ hours makes an applicant much
more competitive. Applicants also submit a personal statement, a resume
addressing health care experience, community involvement and
leadership, a letter of recommendation from a health-care supervisor,
preferably a nurse, and may be invited to write a proctored essay.
Upon admission to the School of Nursing students complete 87 credits of
nursing courses, consisting of clinical and classroom work, over a period
of two years. Occasional afternoon, evening, and weekend clinicals are
part of the program. More details about preparation and the program
itself are on the School of Nursing website.
Interested students should attend an information session, either in the
School of Nursing or in The Gateway Center, 171 Mary Gates Hall,
http://www.washington.edu/students/ugrad/advising/
workshop.html. Advising is also available to UW students in the Gateway
Center and appointments can be scheduled by calling (206)543-2550.
Transfer students can see an adviser on Thursdays between 1 pm and 4
pm in the Gateway Center.
