GRACE EDITH BUTLER, daughter of MORTON BUTLER and MARY ANNA ROBERTSON 5 Sep 1931 in the courthouse, Mt. Vernon, Jefferson Co., IL; it took a long time to find this record. Some family members insisted that they were married in Fairfield, IL, even to the point of Mildred (Shelton) Lathrop stating that she was there and it definitely took place in Fairfield. We searched the courthouse in Fairfield and found nothing. Barbara (Lathrop) Bolton insisted she was covered by common law and it didn't matter if there was a marriage certificate. Bonnie (Lathrop) Holler searched diligently through grandma's papers to find it. We checked the Jefferson County Courthouse and found the record. On more than one occasion when he was seen in public with Grace and his two teenage daughters, Bonnie and Betty, he would be asked, 'Are these your three daughters?'.31 Albert and Grace shared many hours canning fruits and vegetables. Once they had a race to see who could be first to peel enough peaches to fill a half-gallon jar. Albert kept packing and packing the sliced peaches into his jar only to discover he had broken out the bottom of the jar.32 He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.33 He was educated between 1923 and 1927 in Wayne City High School, Wayne City, Wayne Co., IL; PHOTO - Class picture for the year 1924-25. 1923-24 was the first year high school was held in Wayne City located over a poultry house on Main street. It was held in this location for a year and a half.34 , He graduated in 1927 in Wayne City High School, Wayne City, Wayne Co., IL.35 36 LAST MAN'S CLUB REUNITES - A unique club held a 50th anniversary meeting in Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City Memorial Day. It was the Last Man's Club and the group was observing the 50th anniversary of their graduation from Wayne City High School. REASON FOR NAME - Why the name? Simple. Each of seven boys signed a one dollar bill (the big old fashioned size) at graduation time and agreed that the last man alive in the years to come could claim ownership to the bill. Albert Lathrop is now deceased. June Curry of Tucson, Ariz., could not attend. The other five showed up Monday along with Evan Means who could not really claim membership in the club because he had moved from Wayne City at the end of the first semester of school in his senior year and was not present to sign the bill. Fifty years! It was hard for a Press photographer to believe these men were graduated 50 years ago. All were 'bright-eyed and bushy tailed,' full of pep, and as spry as if they were many years younger than they actually were! It was a great reunion! Take a look at the picture of the group, and then look also at the picture of the graduating class taken in 1927. A good looking group, and many Wayne County residents will know these people. The 50 year old picture belongs to Frank Lappin. PHOTO - MEMBERS OF THE LAST MAN'S CLUB met Memorial Day in Wayne City and are, from left, front row, J. Otis Fenton, Sims; William D. For the Lathrop family of Sterling, however, their most cherished memories of Thanksgiving Day are gathering in the hospital waiting room. For three generations, a Lathrop baby has been born on Nov. 25, two of those births being on Thanksgiving Day. 'It's been an exciting Thanksgiving for us,' said grandma Doretta Lathrop. 'Twenty-two years ago I gave birth to our youngest son, Paul, at 11:47 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. This year on Thanksgiving Day, Paul and his wife had a baby girl within minutes of 11:47 a.m.--born on her father's birthday, which is also his father's birthday.' If the baby was not born by Monday, Doretta said doctors would have induced labor. The baby girl, Jordan Marie, was due Nov. 15, but Doretta said the infant 'must have decided that her father's birthday was a good day to be born. Babies must have minds of their own.' Paul, 22, and his wife Dawn, 23, who recently moved from Sterling to Oregon, have been hoping since Dawn became pregnant that the baby would be born on Nov. 25. Doretta's husband Bob, who was also born on Nov. 25, but not a Thanksgiving Day, did some hoping as well. 'We've all been excited and praying that this would happen,' Doretta said. 'We couldn't believe it actually happened. We're just elated and joyful. Those two men could have walked on water yesterday (Thursday).' Doretta recalled her feelings when she was pregnant with Paul on Thanksgiving Day in 1971. 'When you're so far (along) pregnant, you just say, 'Anytime, I don't care,'' she laughed. 'Afterward, I told my husband, 'That's it. This is the last of these kind of birthday presents for you.' The Lathrop family still found time to gather around the dining room table for Thanksgiving dinner along with three foreign guests, who were visiting them through the Rock River International Fellowship. 'They got excited that we were having the baby on Thanksgiving, too,' she said. 'They got to be a part of the excitement.'
