Computer Concept (2) – Input and Output Devices Computer Concept (2) – Input and Output Devices Name: __________________________ Class: _______ Class No.: _______ Input Devices 1. A keyboard is similar to a typewriter. It lets us type in characters, e.g. letters, digits, symbols, etc. Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_(computing) 2. A MIDI keyboard is an electronic piano keyboard connected to the computer. When we play a piece of music on the MIDI keyboard, the notes can be recorded in the computer automatically. 3. A pointing device allows us to control a pointer on the screen. a) Mouse is the most common pointing device. i. Mechanical mouse: It has a ball on its underside; ii. Optical mouse: It uses light to detect the movement of the mouse. b) A graphic tablet consists of an electronic board and a pen. We can use the stylus (“pen”) to move the pointer on screen. It is also used for handwriting input. 4. An image scanner (影像掃瞄器) converts a picture into a digital image. a) The resolution (解像度) of image scanner is measured in dpi (dot per inch). b) With OCR (Optical Character Recognition/光學字符識別) software, scanned documents can be converted into text that can be edited. 5. A barcode reader or barcode scanner allows direct input of data by reading barcode. It is faster and more accurate than manual input. Reference: http://www.barcodesinc.com/generator/index.php 6. A microphone lets us input sound into the computer. We may record the sound by using suitable software. 7. A digital camera or web cam can input photos or videos into a computer. They can be used for video-conferencing (視像會議), so that people from different places can meet and see each other. Most computers have monitor (顯示器/電腦熒光幕) for outputting text (文字), graphics (圖像) and video (影片) on screen. a) There two types of monitors: CRT (顯像管) monitor and LCD (liquid crystal display) monitor (液晶顯示器). LCD monitor is smaller in size, but more expensive. b) A data projector (投影機) uses strong light beams to project images on a large screen, so that a group of people can see the screen clearly. 9. Printers (印表機) output text and graphics on paper, producing hardcopies of document or image. There are ink-jet printer (噴墨打印機) and laser printer (鐳射打印機). 10. Speaker and headphone (or headset) are audio output devices, outputting sound or music. Vocabulary 1. Character (n.) 2. Digit (n.) 3. Symbol (n.) 4. Text (n.) 5. Handwriting (n.) 6. 7. 8. 9. Homework (Write your answers in the worksheet) 1. Lookup the dictionary for the meaning of the following words a) Tablet b) Convert c) Manual d) Accurate e) Detect f) Electronic g) Mechanical h) Beam 2. Write down the I/O (input/output) device(s) involved in the following activities. Example) Watching YouTube Video - _Monitor, Speaker_ a) Playing a computer game. b) Type a report and submit the hardcopy to your teacher. c) Sing a song, record it in computer, and listen to it again. d) Two people have meeting online by video-conferencing. e) Drawing a cartoon character (卡通人物) by using computer. 3. For the pictures in the worksheet, write down “I” for input devices and “O” for output devices.
