Maintenance Sessions
The next scheduled maintenance session on Hartree Systems is:
Mar 28th, 2013 10:00-16:00
User Forum
User Forums have been held on 11th February and 12th March. Both sessions were busy and
productive where a number of issues were discussed. Users were complimentary about the
iDataplex service, which was providing reliable, regular and easy access to 1024 core jobs and had
enabled one user to get a publication out.
User Forums are usually held on every second Tuesday in the month but next month it will be
on 16 April between 10:00 and 11:00 due to prior engagements This is an opportunity to not only
ask questions but also to offer feedback on your experience so far. You can either ‘drop in’ to the
Arkwright room or phone in using the details to be announced nearer the time.
Dates for your Diary
There will be a Hartree Centre open day for DL staff on 25th April

Meetings/Workshops/Events
12-13 February, 2013. “Blue Gene/Q Training Course”
A two-day in-depth Blue Gene/Q training course for users of the Hartree Centre systems took place
in the Brunner-Mond training suite at Daresbury Laboratory. The audience was experienced HPC
programmers with knowledge of Fortran, C, MPI and OpenMP who wanted a more in-depth
understanding of the Blue Gene/Q. The course involved hands-on sessions using Blue Gene/Q in the
Hartree Centre. 42 Participants attended and the list of delegates is available along with more
information on the web at:

1st-4th March 2013
Over the weekend of the 1st-4th March 2013, the Hartree Centre iDataplex system, “BlueWonder”,
was used by the Virtual Engineering Centre (VEC) to carry out some simulation work on behalf of a
customer. The challenge was to run in 24 hours an analysis of 100 design cases that normally takes 1
week to run on the customer’s own system. The job were successfully run in 27.4 hours and VEC
staff were very satisfied with this result. Follow-up work on a larger problem size was also
undertaken and, in total 37,809 jobs were run, using 474,762 cpu hours in 90 real-time hours – a
new record for Blue Wonder.
Gillian Murray, director of the VEC, said: “This work demonstrates successful working between the
Hartree Centre partners and will underpin a number of future planned business support
programmes.” The task involved preparatory work by staff in SCD’s Systems Support and Partner
Support teams, working with VEC staff, and demonstrated how we can deliver great results for our
customers.
5 March, 2013 Extreme Magnitude Earthquake Modelling and Visualisation
Dr Mario Chavez, Institute of Engineering, UNAM, Mexico, gave a seminar in the Crosfield
Visualization Room at DL about his 3D seismic wave propagation parallel staggered finite difference
code, 3DWPFD. This is part of an ongoing research project on which the Institute of Engineering,
UNAM and the SCD staff at Daresbury Laboratory have been working in the last few years. The final
objective of this project is to obtain more accurate simulations of the wave propagation of extreme
earthquakes, similar to the Michoacan, Mexico 1985 (Mw 8.01) and the Tohoku 2011 (Mw 9)
earthquakes.
He presented an update of the results obtained by using the Bluegene/Q and used the Visualization
facilities of the Hartree Center to show preliminary results of the modelling of the Japanese
earthquake in 3D.
