Smart Security System
This is an overview of the Smart Security system manufactured by GE and
sold in the UK by Sentico and promoted to the visually impaired by the RNIB.
It will give you information on the different features and benefits of the Smart
Security system.
Sentico is part of the same family of companies that has established a first

home owners around the world to control who comes into their home.
The
trusted security professionals who install your wireless system will not disrupt or
damage your house décor as there are no wires to hide.
The only wires that
need to be connected are to provide mains power to the control unit and to
provide a link to your telephone system.
The Smart system can be tailored
to your needs from a small studio flat to a large detached home.

simple and easy to learn.
Setting the alarm is simple and can be done with
as little as one button push.
Installation of your alarm system will be completed by your approved security
professional and the installation will include a one to one user training session
with the panel.
You will also receive a manual in whichever format is most
convenient to you, for example, you may choose a full brow manual, you may
choose a large print manual or you may choose to have a word document in
electronic format.
In addition to the operation manuals you will be given a
telephone helpline number which you can call at any time during working hours
to gain assistance from a friendly operator.

access.

ability to dial in and speak directly to someone in another room are just some
of the features that make this system smart.
The Smart system can have up to 24 devices connected and each of these is
individually identified within the system.
Below are details of the different
devices.
Devices
The PIR detector is used to detect movement.
PIR stands for Passive Infra
Red and this detector will alert the system to any movement within its field of
view.
There is a second type of PIR detector available which will ignore pets
moving within the room up to 30kgs which is a fairly large Labrador or
Retriever.
For doors and windows, we use a two part device that will alert
when the door is opened or the window is opened.
Again, there are no wires
between the detector and the panel.
There will be some areas in your home that have a lot of glass such as a
conservatory and in this area, we would use a glass break detector or acoustic
sensor.
These are the main types of devices that we use to detect intrusion.
There is, however, another device, equally as important, that is used to detect
fire or smoke.

The smoke detector will alert the system if it detects smoke or

a rapid rise in temperature.
You may already have smoke detectors fitted to
your home and the difference with these connected to your Smart system is
that this will alert you if you are away from your home in addition to alerting
you when you are in your home.
In addition to devices that respond to
intrusion or fire, there are a number of devices that can be used to summon
assistance.
The first is a small push button wrist watch that can be worn
throughout the day and at any time by pressing this it will immediately summon
assistance.
A variation of this is a pendant that can either be worn as a belt
clip, around the neck or fitted to a wall or a wheelchair.

The final and totally unique device connected to the system is the alarmed GE
KeySafe.
This is a metal box fitted to the outside of the wall to store a key
to provide access to somebody giving you assistance.
The key is contained
within a small storage vault that has a unique code combination set by you
that allows somebody with that unique code to have access to your front door
and gain entry. This means that you do not need to issue several keys to
people or, worse still, leave a key under a flower pot, to enable somebody to
gain access to your property.

When this level
of protection is set, any device on this circuit will be active and will go into
alarm mode if entry or exit to or from the property occurs through a door or a
window.
In this setting, you are able to move freely around the inside of your
home but no one is able to get in without triggering the alarm.
This would
be used, for example, when you are in the house or in bed.
The second level is when the motion sensors are active.
This would normally
be set when you are out and want the alarm to activate if any of the sensors
detect movement inside the house.
In addition to these two simple settings there are many configurations that can
be used to ensure you have the protection to match your home and your
lifestyle.
Again, your engineer will discuss this with you and programme the
system for you.

buttons to enter your unique code to confirm that it is legitimate disarming.
Remember, when you use the key fob, there is no need to enter your code.
You can choose additional codes for friends or family.
For example, you may
choose to have one code for yourself, a second code for relatives and a third
code given to a cleaner or home help.

be disarmed normally but it will send out a telephone message alerting your
respondent that you have disarmed the system under duress.

The final button on the top row is a system status.
Pressing this will prompt
the system to give you an audible announcement of its state, for example, it
will give the time; it may also alert if the batteries are low, or if any function
of the alarm system needs your attention.
If your system is monitored, the

there is something that needs attention.
The third row has six buttons.
The first is for chime doors.
Pressing this
button instructs the system to make an announcement whenever a door is
opened, particularly useful if you leave your back door undone and would like
to know whenever it is opened. The second button is for bypass.
If you
attempted to set the system whilst a door or window was open, the system
will announce that that door or window is open and will not allow you to set
the system.
You may decide, however, that you want to bypass this circuit.
Pressing this bypass button will allow you to bypass a particular circuit.

The panel is very simple to operate and your engineer will programme the
system so that you will barely need to touch the panel.
If you do need
assistance, there is a help line available that you can call and somebody will
help you make the changes you need to make.

Remember, at every stage of

using Smart, the system will give you a verbal prompt or verbal confirmation of
the actions.
When your Smart system goes into alarm mode, it will normally sound an
audible alarm at the panel unless you have chosen to have a silent alarm.
In
addition to this, it will make a telephone call automatically to a number that
you have chosen.
This may be to your own mobile, it may be to a
neighbour, it may be to a relative. They will receive an audible message from
the system advising them that you have an alarm at your property.
They will
then be able to respond to your alarm.
In addition to this single message dialling out from the panel, there is an
option to have your system monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The
monitoring operator, in receipt of your alarm notification, will then work their
way through a list of respondents that you have given until they speak to
somebody who can respond to the alarm and will advise them of the location
and, with your prior permission, will also advise them of the unique code that
you have set to your GE KeySafe in order that they can get access to the
key and access to the property.
The monitoring station will not give out the

code to your alarm, so they will need to remember this code to unset the
alarm.
The monitoring station will also monitor the health of your system,
checking to make sure that the batteries are in good condition and that the
system is functioning normally.
The batteries last between five and eight years
and therefore you should not expect to be changing batteries on a frequent
basis.
Smart is also able to be controlled by the telephone, for example, if you are
at work and you need to allow access for an electrician or plumber to get into
your home.
You can dial into the system and remotely unset, for a period,
and then dial in and set the system.
You can also dial into the system and
listen into your home or speak to somebody at home to check all is well.
This would be useful, for example, if somebody had issued a panic alert and
you wanted to dial in and speak to them immediately if they were unable to
get to the telephone. This phone control option would also be ideal for setting
the system if you extend a holiday at short notice.

Smart can also be programmed to produce a variety of reports, for example,
alerting you if the system has not been unset by a particular time.
You may
choose to have a report sent every time the system is set or unset.
Smart
has a large reporting capability option and your engineer will discuss with you
how to achieve the reports and notifications that you need.
