Name __________________________ HUMAN BIOLOGY II HOMEWORK #5 The Immune System Due Tuesday, October 26 For a review of blood and the circulatory system, watch Path of a Red Blood Cell (link on blog). Go to the Exploratorium’s Microscope Imaging Station (link on the blog). On the home page, click on the red blood cells, then on the link to Blood: The Body’s Vital Defense Force. Play the video: A Scientist’s View: what’s so interesting about blood? Answer these questions, based on the video: 1. What do granulocytes (white blood cells) do to bacteria? 2. Why did the granulocytes not eat the red blood cells? 3. The granulocytes die after eating the bacteria. What eats the granulocytes? 4. How is that cell UNLIKE a granulocyte? 5. Why does a tattoo last for a lifetime? 6. Watch Neutrophil Chase (link on blog) – these were the most common white blood cells you saw today under the microscope. To prove you watched the video, draw a picture of the neutrophil featured in the video, and label what it was chasing. 7. Read the entire article Blood: The body’s vital defense force. This handout is the same information that is on the Exploratorium website. Use three different colored highlighters or colored pencils. Underline or highlight the following information with its own color: 1) information about our innate (“born with”) immunity; 2) information about our acquired immunity; and 3) information about allergies. You should be prepared to discuss this information tomorrow in class.
