Course Number, Section Number, and Course Title: ECON 3388-501 European Economic History Time and Place of Class Meetings: Monday / Wednesday 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. – COBA 147 Description of Course Content: The English Industrial Revolution, Europe’s slow transformation before 1850, and large scale industry, banking, transportation, & commerce in the later 19th & 20th centuries. Topics for the 20th century include depression, war, posteconomic integration, & the collapse of communism. Student Learning Outcomes: The student will be able to: 1. Compare and contrast major economic systems and philosophies. 2. Describe foundations of economic growth over various periods of time. 3. Identify historical figures and events that have shaped modern economic systems. 4. Utilize economic tools and theory in the interpretation of historical events. 5. Discuss current economic conditions in Europe. 6. Acquire historical and cultural information for application in international business transactions. Only simple function calculators may be used during exams. Possession or use of textbooks, notes, scratch paper, or electronic devices (e.g., cell phones, unacceptable calculators, PDAs, laptops, cameras) during exams will result in an automatic “F” for the course. Test booklets are the property of the University and must be returned after testing and review sessions. Final Review Week: A period of five class days prior to the first day of final examinations in the long sessions shall be designated as Final Review Week. The purpose of this week is to allow students sufficient time to prepare for final examinations. During this week, there shall be no scheduled activities such as required field trips or performances; and no instructor shall assign any themes, research problems or exercises of similar scope that have a completion date during or following this week unless specified in the class syllabi. During Final Review Week, an instructor shall not give any examinations constituting 10% or more of the final grade, except makeup tests and laboratory examinations. In addition, no instructor shall give any portion of the final examination during Final Review Week. Classes are held as scheduled during this week and lectures and presentations may be given.
