Academic Career
Professor Dr. Abdul Aziz bin Dato’ Abdul Samad gain his first degree in Civil Engineering in 1984 from
University of Glasgow. He then obtained his Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering at University of
Strathclyde in 1986. This was followed by his PhD in 1994 at University of Manchester under the
supervision of Prof. Peter Montague. His PhD research focuses on the experimental and theoretical
investigation of slabs subjected to bending moments in one plane, in two orthogonal planes, in torsion
and to combinations of these three loads. The research establishes the theory on Johansen’s yield
criterion in predicting the ultimate moment of slabs subjected to bending moments and torsion.
He joined Univesiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in 1988 as a tutor before being appointed as a full time
academic member of the university in 1994. In 1998, upon his excellent academic achievements, he
was appointed as an Associate Professor. During his career at UPM, Professor Dr. Abdul Aziz and
other research members of the Housing Research Centre at UPM developed a mortarless interlocking
hollow block which receives the Gold Award at the Geneva International Convention in 2001. The
research was granted its patent from United Kingdom in May 2002 (Patent No: GB2361254). The
research was succesfully awarded another patent in the USA in June 2005 (Patent No: US6907704
B2).
His other research interest includes the structural development of Precast Concrete Sandwich Panel as
an alternative building system for the construction industry in Malaysia. The panel system uses two
concrete wythe as outer skins connected by shear connectors to create a composite behaviour to the
panel. The gap between the two concrete wythe creates a vacuum trapping hot air, hence, allowing the
interior building to be thermally comfortable. A suitable jointing system was also developed for the
precast concrete sandwich panel focusing on the L-joints, T-joints and cross joints. He has also been
actively involve in the research for shear strengthening of precracked and non-precracked reinforced
concrete beams with externally bonded Bi-directional Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strips.
The research manages to develop an equation to compute the shear contribution of CFRP to the shear
capacity of reinforced concrete beams.
Throughout his 20 years of academic career, Professor Dr. Abdul Aziz has successfully supervised 3
PhD students and 7 Master’s students by research. He has also published upto 30 refereed
international journal papers and presented over 50 papers at various international and national
conferences. By 2003, due to his excellent academic contribution towards teaching, research and
development, Dr. Abdul Aziz joined Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) as a Professor in
Structural Engineering and was subsequently appointed as Deputy Dean for the Faculty of Civil and
Environmental Engineering. From 2007, he was promoted to the position of Dean of the Faculty.
Professor Dr. Abdul Aziz is still actively involve in research and development, his current research
mainly focuses on the use of lightweight concrete as precast panels for the industrialization of building
systems, further research on strengthening of various structural components using CFRP strips under
shear and bending moments is also being investigated. He was promoted to the position of Deputy
Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) on 1st October 2010.
