Why It’s About Jesus
Scripture Reading: Colossians 1:15-21
1. He is God Expressing Himself
“He is the image of the invisible God” vs. 15
NLT: “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God”
Everything That Makes God God is in Jesus
“For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell” vs. 19
HCS: “Because all the fullness was pleased to dwell in Him”
Amplified: “For it has pleased [the Father] that all the divine fullness (the sum total of the
divine perfection, powers, and attributes) should dwell in Him permanently.”
2. He Outranks Everything That Was Created
“the firstborn over all creation” Vs. 15
NLT: “He existed before God made anything at all and is supreme over all creation.”
Weymouth: “the Firstborn and Lord of all creation”
3. He Made It All
“For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and
invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.” Vs. 16
4. Everything Exists for His Purposes and Pleasure
“All things were created through Him and for Him.” Vs. 16
ASV: “all things have been created through him, and unto him”
5. He was Here First
“And He is before all things” vs. 17
Amplified: “And He Himself existed before all things”
NLT: “He existed before everything else began”
6. He Holds The Creation Together
“and in Him all things consist” vs. 17
NLT: “he holds all creation together”
Weymouth: “through Him the universe is a harmonious whole”
7. He is the Head of the Church
“And He is the head of the body, the church” vs. 18
8. He is the Source of Life for His People
“who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead” vs. 18
9. He Stands Supreme
“that in all things He may have the preeminence.” Vs. 18
Amplified: “the Firstborn from among the dead, so that He alone in everything and in every
respect might occupy the chief place [stand first and be preeminent].”
Weymouth: “in order that He Himself may in all things occupy the foremost place.”
NIV: “so that in everything he might have the supremacy.”
10. Reconciliation with God Comes Only Through Him
“and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in
heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. And you, who once were
alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled” vs. 20-21
