1. The 9th Annual NJROTC Area 8 Academic Challenge will be held on Saturday, 26 January
2013, at Pearl High School, 500 Pirate Cove, Pearl, Mississippi, from 0900 – 1500. Competition
is designed for units currently assigned to NJROTC Area 8 region. The host will be the Pearl
High School NJROTC unit and the primary point of contact is CAPT John Lewis DC USN (ret).
The entry fee is $75.00 per team. The deadline for submitting the entry form is 11 Jan 2013.
Entry forms may be emailed, faxed, or mailed. A phone call or email to CAPT Lewis indicating
your intent to participate would be appreciated. Some school districts have convoluted payment
systems so please submit your entry fees as soon as possible. We trust you. It is anticipated that
there will be a concession stand available where cadets can get drinks and food.
2. A maximum of 16 teams will be allowed for the competition due to limitation of the audio
visual equipment. Each school may enter a maximum of two teams, however second teams will
be eligible on a first come first served basis after all participating schools have had the
opportunity to enter at least one team. The Order of Battle will remain a random selection for all
initial rounds, with the exception of schools with two teams. Schools with two teams will be
matched “head to head” in one of the preliminary rounds so that only their best team advances to
the championship round.
3. Teams are limited to four members with one cadet from each grade level corresponding to the
number of years they have been in NJROTC. In other words, your 1st year Naval Science cadet
must be a freshman, your 2nd year Naval Science cadet a sophomore, your 3rd year Naval Science
cadet a junior, and your 4th year Naval Science cadet a senior. Should a unit not have a cadet in a
particular grade level, they may substitute a cadet from a more junior grade.
4. The academic challenge will be conducted as a Jeopardy-style game with categories drawn
from the Cadet Field Manual, Naval Science 1 textbook, Naval Science 2 textbook, Naval
1
22 November 2012
Science 3 textbook, and current events. Each game will be comprised of an initial or single
Jeopardy round which includes seven categories comprised of questions worth from 100 to 500
points along with one daily double question. The second round will be a double Jeopardy round
with seven categories of questions worth from 200 to 1000 points plus two daily double
questions. The game culminates with a final Jeopardy question whose category will be
announced prior to wagers being made by the respective teams. Teams may wager any amount
of their current point value on the daily double and final Jeopardy questions. The team captain
will indicate the amount to be wagered. There will be a separate Naval Science 1 category of
questions during the initial Jeopardy round that only freshmen Naval Science 1 cadets may
answer. Any assistance from other team members will be treated as an incorrect response,
regardless if the answer given is correct or not. Correct answers will allow teams to control the
board until another team correctly responds, at which time they will control the board.
5. Assuming that 16 teams will participate, four teams will compete against each other at one
time in the initial round. Rounds are completed when all categories have been exhausted. This
rule may be modified by the announcer prior to a match should time restrictions deem necessary.
The team with the highest Jeopardy point value at the end of their round will move on to the
championship round. There will be four teams in the championship round. The team with the
highest score in the championship round will win the Academic Challenge. The team with the
second highest score will place second, the team with the third highest score in the championship
round will place third and the team with the fourth highest score in the championship round will
place fourth.
6. Each team will be assigned a cadet escort and study room. Cadets should not leave their
room except for head calls or to get a drink of water. Cadets will be responsible for making sure
that their classroom is cleaned up and restored to the condition they found it in. All competitors
shall turn their cell phones in to their instructor(s) prior to the beginning of the initial
round. Competitors with cell phones on their person will be disqualified regardless of
whether or not the phones were in use.
7. A cadet may only compete on one team. Competing cadets may not sit in the audience and
observe other teams in competition. Only schools and cadets who have been eliminated from
competition will be allowed to quietly observe other teams in competition. Under no circumstances will cadets discuss the game’s content with others until the competition is over. Violators will be removed from the competition and their team disqualified.
8. The order of questioning in the initial single Jeopardy round will be determined by random
drawing. Both the double Jeopardy and final Jeopardy rounds’ order of questioning will go in
order from lowest point value to highest.
9. All team members shall are wear the Navy Service Uniform (khaki shirt/black pants/no
covers) during competition. Each team will assign a team captain. All team captains will report
to the announcer, CAPT Lewis, prior to the competition to review rules for the competition.
Instructors may wear appropriate civilian attire.

22 November 2012
10. A buzzer system will be used. The cadet will select the category and point value they wish
to challenge. The point value chosen shall be the lowest point value still on the board for that
particular category. They will then review their selection and give their answer in the form of a
question. Their response must be in the form of a question for it to be correct. NOTE: Prior to
each question being asked, all players must have their hands in their lap. There will be no
more lock-out until the entire question is read. Each team will be given 10 seconds to respond.
A time keeper will be utilized to ensure fairness of play.
11. A panel of three judges comprised of Naval Science Instructors will be selected prior to each
contest. These judges will ensure an accurate score is maintained by the designated scorekeeper
and make rulings on any questioned response when requested by the announcer. The announcer’s rulings are final and not subject to review.
12. All team participants will receive an Area EIGHT miniature “8” to affix to their Academic
Ribbon for participating. First place team members will receive a gold “8,” second place team
members will receive a silver “8,” and all other participants will receive a bronze “8.” Team
trophies will be presented to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place finishers.
13. If the maximum number of teams does not enter, the competition will be restructured in the
fairest way possible to assure that there are four teams in the championship round. Ideally, we
will have four teams competing during each of the four sessions of the initial round. If the
number of competing teams is not a multiple of four, we will modify the composition of the
round, e.g., with 13 teams we would have four rounds comprised of 3, 3, 3, and 4 teams as drawn
by lottery.
14. Questions should be addressed to CAPT Lewis or Master Chief Lott at 601-932-7986. We
look forward to seeing you!
