Fall 2011 College Attendance for Admitted Freshmen Who Went

Fall 2011 College Attendance for Freshmen Who Were Admitted but Chose
Not to Enroll at UMass Boston
In fall 2011, UMass Boston admitted 4,417 new freshmen. Of those, 1,297 enrolled at
UMass Boston and 3,120 chose not to enroll. The Office of Institutional Research and
Policy Studies (OIRP) used our access to National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) data to
identify higher education institutions that the students who chose not to enroll here may
have attended. Of the 3,120 students we queried NSC about, they were able to locate
2,583 at another college or university. The NSC could not locate 537 of the students. This
does not mean that those students did not attend an institution other than UMass Boston.
They may have blocked reporting of their locations, attended an institution that does not
participate in the NSC, or made it impossible for the NSC to identify them by changing a
detail of their name (middle initial, suffix, spelling etc.) because of peculiarities in the
way NSC identifies students. A full listing of the colleges attended broken out by level
and institutional control is provided in Appendix I on page 4.
Eighty-seven of the students who did not enroll at UMass Boston attended a two-year
college instead. Fifty attended a Massachusetts public two-year college and 37 attended a
two-year school out of state. There was some speculation that such a large number of
students attending two-year schools might be explained by those seeking nursing
programs, but this was not the case. Only two of the 87 students had applied for a nursing
major. There was also no unusual pattern by either race or citizenship. The numbers of
students attending the Massachusetts two-year schools are displayed in Table 1.

The 37 students who attended an out-of-state two-year attended a total of 34 different
institutions. None of those institutions had more than 2 of the students. The full listing is

More than 25% of the students who did not enroll here attended another Massachusetts
public four-year school, a total of 713 students. Almost two thirds of those students chose
another UMass campus. The numbers of students at each Massachusetts public four-year
are displayed in Table 2.

A total of 544 students chose a public four-year institution outside of Massachusetts. The
institutions enrolling at least 10 of the students are displayed in Table 3. All others are
listed in the appendix. The students attended a total of more than 150 public institutions
outside of Massachusetts.

The largest group of students, 758, chose to attend a private four-year school in
Massachusetts. Suffolk University was the most popular by far, with the Massachusetts
College of Pharmacy and Wentworth Institute second and third. A listing of those
institutions enrolling 10 or more of the students is presented in Table 4 with the
remainder in the appendix. Overall, the students attended 47 different private schools in
Massachusetts.

The balance of the students located by the NSC, 481, attended private schools outside of
Massachusetts. The students were located at 186 different private four-year schools all
across the country. A relative few institutions had as many as ten of the students, and they
were in the northeast. Those institutions with at least ten of the students attending are
listed in Table 5, with the full listing in the appendix.

Students who are accepted at UMass Boston appear to be attractive to colleges and
universities across the country. The breadth of the institutions they attend after choosing
not to attend UMass Boston is impressive.
