what we give.”

Day of Event Onsite Fundraising
AUCTION (SILENT or LIVE)
Ask for contributions of unique items such as homemade toys or art, a hand-knitted
sweater, breakfast or dinner at someone's home, or a ride on someone's sailboat.
Display the items (or their description) prior to the event. Hold the auction over lunch or
at a convenient time. Another way to look at this is to have each team donate an item
to be bid on in a silent auction. Money raised from that item will go toward the team’s
total. This encourages teams to donate nice items.
BALLOON LAUNCH
For a donation, team members can purchase a biodegradable balloon and write a
message to a loved one. Near the end of the Relay, everyone gathers around with their
balloons and then you launch all of them at the same time.
BALLOON POP
Team members collect prizes as well as donate their own goods or services as prizes.
Before filling each balloon with helium, put a note inside with the name of the a prize.
People donate $1.00 to buy a balloon and pop it to find out what they win.
\
BEADS
Sell pink and purple beads, which can be used to make bracelets (4-18 year olds)
26 Fundraising Tips
BEAN BAG TOSS
$1 per throw or 3 throws for $2
BOWLING CHANCE
A $1.00 donation gives you the chance to throw two balls (toy bowling set). If you strike,
your name is entered into a drawing two times. If you spare with your second ball, your
name is entered into the drawing once. The team solicits a nice prize for the drawing.
CAKEWALK
Have each team bring a cake to the opening ceremonies at the Relay. Schedule the
cakewalk at the peak time of Relay when several hundred people will be in attendance,
and ask for a minimum donation of five dollars to participate. Place numbered squares
around the center of the track or on the stage, and have people follow the numbers.
When the music stops, so do the people (like musical chairs). A number is drawn and
the person on that space will win a cake!
CARICATURES
Offer caricatures at your campsite for a donation. It’s sure to be a hit!

sure the operator is properly licensed and insured.
FACE PAINTING
Set up a booth at Relay and offer face painting for a donation.

$1.00 to fish for a prize.

flashlight, bug spray, sunscreen, baby wipes).
GLOW GEAR
When the sun goes down sell stuff that glows in the dark.
GURNEY RIDES
For the eighth year, the White Bear Lake Fire Department in Minnesota will be raising
money onsite at Relay. “The Hosers” bring a gurney and take turns offering rides to the
Relay participants for $2 a lap. The participants young and old wait in line for this

department. This fundraiser brought in $800 additional dollars to their team that raises
more than $2500.

HUMAN JUKEBOX
For a fundraiser for the Chandler Relay, the Bogle
Jr. High team created a "human juke box" outside
one of the grocery stores (I think it was Safeway, but
am not absolutely sure). People made a donation,
chose a tune and Bethany sang from inside the box!
JAIL & BAIL
A former American Cancer Society fundraiser. For a donation, participants can be
arrested. For an additional donation, they can post their own bail.
KISS A PIG CONTEST

donate more money for the cause.

at community Relays. Participants are asked to collect $10.00 (suggested fee) worth of

the list of songs in another. Choose one name with each song. If the person selected

dollar, they can make someone else sing the song.

light the homerun path with lights. Bulbs are $5 each.

Rice Krispie Treats (large size), soy candles (8 oz.), and can coolers.
SUCKERS FOR CANCER
Sell suckers for $1 each and tie a mission message around each one.
TASTE OF RELAY
"The Taste of the Relay", is an opportunity for area restaurants to join the American
Cancer Society. We ask that places donate a sampling of one or two of their specialty
dishes and a person to help serve. At the Relay, in the cafeteria or in a tent, the
restaurants set up. Participants, and the public donate $5.
THE GREAT CHOCOLATE ESCAPE
All of the volunteers bring a chocolate dessert and guests are charged $5 for all you can
eat, $5 for a standard take-out container, or $10 for both. This concept could translate
to barbecue, sandwiches, whatever. Basically, all you need is a couple of banquet
tables to set all the food on, and someone to recruit the cooks. Sometimes we use
place cards (bought at card or party stores) to label foods. For a small local fundraiser
(a rural mill town of about 5000) it usually brings in about $2000, without a lot of effort.
TIKI TORCHES
Sell torches for $25-$100 each. Some torches were donated to loved ones in memory
or honor of their fight against cancer. Other torches were purchased and donated to the
local fire department. They ran out of the first bunch of torches so they purchased
more. They again ran out after selling a total of 135 torches. That was an additional
$13,500 for this event.
VIDEO SALE
How many times can you watch Forrest Gump? Sell those old movies at Relay!
6
WEDDING CHAPEL
Charge a donation to “marry” people or renew their vows. Have wedding cake, wedding
photos, wedding bands, and a ride around the track in a golf cart with cans on it. Each
activity can require a donation or be done as a package deal. Use a stand up cutout of a
tux and wedding dress for heads to take a photo. All for fun!
Please note: this would, of course, not be a legally binding activity!
7
Post Event Fundraising
ART SALES
Have students produce great works of art and have an art show. Parents and friends
buy back their budding artist’s masterpieces.
BAKE FOR A CURE’S SAKE
Hold a Friday bake sale at work so employees will have treats for the weekend. Ask for
baked goods to be wrapped attractively so they could be given as gifts. Encourage
breakfast items, as well as sweets like bars and cookies.
BEAD BONANZA
Take orders for personalized bracelets, keychains, necklaces, etc. for a donation.
BOWLATHON
It appeals to pre-teens as well as teens, and they even managed to involve adults.
Bowlers go out and get pledges for each pin they knock down.
BUSINESS RAFFLES (check with your RDD/CDD about raffle laws in your state)
Coworkers can earn money by raffling the following:







A member of management mows your yard, shovels your snow, etc.
Trade jobs with CEO for a day
Dinner at boss’s home
Free lunch with the boss
Company logo apparel
Parking place(s)
A day off
CAMPGROUND LUMINARIA CEREMONIES
There lots of recreational vehicles who gather at area campgrounds throughout the
summer. It’s quite a community. Ask your campgrounds to have weekly luminaria
ceremonies. People at campgrounds are always looking for something to do, and
especially like activities where they can interact.
CANCER CONTROL LUNCHEON
Have a brown bag lunch seminar and invite someone from the American Cancer
Society to speak on cancer prevention. Ask employees to donate what they’d normally
spend on going out to lunch or charge a set fee.
CAR WASH AT A CAR DEALERSHIP
Get your teams together for a local town car wash. Have the teams pre sell the car
wash tickets and then volunteer their time to work the actual car wash. This works great
for high school teams.
CASUAL FOR CANCER
Ask your company CEO or president to let staff dress casual or wear denim for a
contribution of $5 or more.
8
CELEBRITY PIE AUCTION
A celebrity DJ on a local radio station could host a Celebrity Pie Auction using their
radio station for 6 hours to place the pies of two citizens simultaneously on the auction
block to receive bids by call-in to the radio station. All monies donated would be
donated to the American Cancer Society. During each 15-minute segment the
"celebrities" would be on the air being interviewed by the dj. This not only creates an
awareness of the American Cancer Society, its cause and goals, but it also brought to
the listening audience the personal stories of each of the celebrities of why people are
involved. In one case, there were 40 celebrities involved in this type of event they and
they raised over $14,000.
COMPUTER MESSAGE
Ask your company computer expert to have a message “pop up” on employees’ screens
asking for a donation. It won’t go away until they give.
CUT FOR A CURE
Ask your local hair salon to host a cut-a-thon. Participants would pay a set fee for the
service, and 100% of this fee would then be donated back to Relay.
DESSERT TASTING DINNER
Announce it as a Gourmet Dessert Extravaganza. Call it what you will, but make the
name just as delicious as what attendees will envision. A Dessert Extravaganza should
be something where people will pay to get a taste of exotic and unique desserts that
should be donated or made by team members. You can charge from $7.50 to $15.00
per plate.
DUPED BY DOLLARS
This works well at colleges or large companies. Departments/dormitories set up a jar
for change drop offs. The group with the most points wins a prize. Pennies are worth
positive points; silver coins and cash are worth negative points. Sabotage the other
residence halls by dropping silver coins and cash into their jar!
FLAMINGOS IN THE YARD
An eight year old boy in put "Freddie Flamingos" in people's yards with a note around
Freddie’s neck asking for a donation for Relay For Life. In the morning, he collected the
birds and donations. He raised more than 6,000!!!
FLYING PIG PROJECT
Place a piggy bank on someone’s porch (when they’re not looking) and to make the pig
fly away, they will need to give the pig a donation.
GUEST BARTENDING EVENING
On a Friday night from 6-9 PM. Six guest bartenders, each dressed in costume of
choice and work an hour shift. They pre-invite friends to come out and support them. In
one instance, these guest bartenders collectively raised $11,000 in tips.
9
HONEY-DO FUNDRAISING
Each raffle ticket enters the buyer into a drawing to win a crew of "Honey Do Helpers" to
help with a home improvement project. Helpers could paint a room, organize a closet or
pantry, plant a garden in the spring, or help with garage or basement
cleaning, but no housework. Sell raffle tickets for $5 each or five for $20.
OIL CHANGE FUNDRAISER
Request that a local oil change garage donate their time and material for a Saturday
afternoon of oil changes. 100 percent of the income goes to the local Relay. While the
customer is waiting for their car you can sell luminaria and food to help pass the time.
Don't forget the cancer control information!
PANCAKE AND SAUSAGE BREAKFAST
Many local restaurants are willing to donate items so don’t hesitate to ask. These
donations will keep overhead down and profits high.
PENNY DRIVE
Set up containers all over town.
PHOTO CONTEST
Hold a “stumper” photo contest! Ask employees to bring a baby or childhood photo of
themselves that they believe no one can identify. Ask for a donation to make a guess.
Give winners a contributed prize.
PINK TOILETS
This was an ad in the local paper: Beware of the HOT PINK TOILET. If a HOT PINK
TOILET appears in your business or home, a donation will be required to have the
“EYESORE” removed. We all know of someone or will be affected at one time in our
lives by this terrible disease. "LET'S HELP FIND A CURE!!"
A letter came with the toilet: CONGRATULATIONS! If you are reading this note, you
have received your new fashionable yard ornament. To have this new fashionable yard
ornament removed, we are asking you to make a pledge to the "FLUSHING OUT
CANCER FUNDRAISER" Within the next 24 hours. To do so please contact
(NAMES/PHONE #'S OF CONTACTS). They will arrange for the collection of your
donation and the removal of you ornament. If you would like to see this ornament in
front of someone else’s establishment, please inform us. Thank you for your
cooperation in this fundraiser! Thank you.
QUILT MAKING
Do you have a team that makes quilts? Make quilt squares in honor and in memory of
people with cancer. Ask for a contribution for different sizes: a 4" square for $5, an 8"
square for $15, and a 12" square for $25. Display the quilt at a public location, such as
the chamber of commerce.
RESTAURANTS TO THE RESCUE
Ask a local restaurant or cafe to contribute a portion of the proceeds for a day. It could
be for a certain menu item or ask the owner if a special relay item can be on the daily
special. Create a sign letting patrons know if they purchase this special; the owner will
donate half the money to the American Cancer Society.
10
SPORTS TOURNAMENTS
Set up challenge matches between individuals or departments for basketball, softball,
football, wiffleball, dodgeball or any sport! Ask for a donation as an entry fee and
admission fee. Ask for contributions in exchange for refreshments at the event.
SUNS & MOONS DONATIONS CARDS
Engage local gas stations, small businesses, grocery stores to sell the donations cards
for $1 in exchange for a Sun/Moon to display at the business in honor of or memory of a
loved one.
THEME DINNER
Have your team do a theme dinner. Get a hall donated and have each member of your
team prepare part of the meal. Sell tickets and get some entertainment donated.
“TOPLESS” CARWASH
Advertise a “topless carwash” when boys ask for a topless carwash all but the top of the
car gets washed.
WINDSHIELD WASHING
Fast food restaurant teams can collect donations for washing windshields as cars pass
through drive up window.
WISHING YOU WELL
Set up a “wishing well” at your local school, business, church, or store with a sign
explaining that all proceeds go toward Relay for Life and a cure for cancer. Put and ad
in your local paper announcing specific days for change drop-offs. Maybe the store or
your employer would do a matching gift? You could even have this at your tent site at
the relay.

(Sample letter for Team Captains or Participants)
Dear Team Captains (or participants):
When my daughter was diagnosed with cancer 7 years ago, our family had one
goal: To Beat Cancer. It was a rough two-years of treatment, side effects, sleepless
nights, family stress and job stress, but we reached out goal! Samantha is now cancer
free and now has a family of her own.
When my friend Stuart asked me to co-chair this year’s Relay, we set a goal of
raising $65,000. With help from all of you and our wonderful community, we had a
wonderful Relay. Our net to date is $53,000. Just like my family’s goal was to see our
daughter beat cancer, our Relay Committee’s goal is to get to their $65,000!
Two teams have already stepped up to hold one last post-event fundraiser to
help us meet our goal. If your team plus 13 more teams each raise $700 each, we will
meet our goal. And who knows … maybe instead of a fundraiser someone at your
company or who does business with your company will just write a check for the whole
amount! It might work! You never know who will help unless you ask!
We have until July 30 to get this done. Let’s meet our Relay goal. And let’s beat
cancer!
Please call me and tell me if your team can help. Here’s my phone number and e-mail
address.
Sincerely,
Patty Farrell

Rain Dampens Track, but not Spirit of the
American Cancer Society Relay For Life
Dear Friend,
The weather didn’t hold out for our American Cancer Society Relay For Life, but our
dedication to cancer is still as strong as ever! We have $22,000 to go to reach our goal,
and we are excited that individuals and teams are stepping forward with donations that
are helping us get there!
If you didn’t make it to Relay, or had to leave early, we wanted you to know that we are
still accepting donations, which will be put toward your team total and the Relay For
Life.
We sincerely thank all cancer survivors, team leaders, team members, donors and
sponsors for their support during this soggy season.
Thanks to you, we are making great progress in the fight against cancer through
research, education, advocacy and service, and your dollars are directly helping us to
save lives, prevent diagnosis, and improve quality of life.
Donations to help reach our goal can be sent to ________ at ________________.

(Suggested e-mail blast)
Hey Relayers!
We DID it! We had a great Relay at the fairgrounds last month. We bravely set a
$100,000 goal and while we did not meet it (yet) we know we still will!
Many of you are giving one last push to raise the additional $28,000 that we still
need. This means that if each team raises an additional $400 that we will make our
goal!
Would you consider sending out one more round of e-mails, mentioning how we did
($72,000 is not bad!!), and asking for donations of $25, $50, $100 or more to get
us to our $100,000? (Mentioning specific amounts is proven to work!) Remember
to include your personal reason for Relaying!
Our deadline is July 30.
Sincerely,
Pete Featherington
Chair
P.S., Of course one e-mail to the right relative or friend who would gladly write a
check for $500 or $1,000 is another way to get this done. It does work for some
folks. Or, if your company does a lot of business with a particular vendor, the
vendor might be glad to help in a big way too . . . if asked!
Thanks so much for helping us reach goal and for helping the wonderful work of the
American Cancer Society in our community.

I would encourage everyone who is a part of Relay For Life to do the same.
