Section is the sponsor of the award, Board members are encouraged to
attend.
Chair Elect: K. Lee
 Katherine Lee expressed thanks to those who had helped her in her new role
as chair-elect and program chair. She expressed concern about the cost of

 Interview with Prof. Martin Karplus, 2013 Nobel Laureate- I met with Martin
Karplus last week in his office at Harvard. He was very pleasant and
unassuming. Our invitation was the first one that he accepted since he
returned from Sweden. He had declined most of the invitations because he
felt that they were not relevant. I asked why and he said that it would do some
good to talk to a group of chemists, it was local and he liked my letter. I have
written an article for the March issue of the Nucleus and am looking forward
to his talk on March 6.I have already started posting info on this. We would
like to have 150 to 200 people at the talk.
 In addition to the written report, Jack Driscoll proposed that the Section honor
Martin Karplus by extending honorary membership to the Section, and that
other Nobel Prize winners in chemistry and biochemistry be similarly honored.
A discussion followed regarding the complex nature of a situation in which
some Nobel Prize winners were already members and others were not. At the
suggestion of Dorothy Phillips, the Board voted to present an ACS Salutes to
Excellence Award to Martin Karplus.
 National Historic Chemical Landmark- Vivian Walworth provided me with
the information needed to start work on designating 2 Osborn St. in
Cambridge, Edwin Land’s laboratory as a National Historic Chemical
Landmark. Vivian provided me with a telephone # and I placed a call last
week. I have also talked to Keith Lindbloom of the ACS about this.
 ACS Entrepreneurial Forum April 9, 2014- We have selected 10 mentors
for the participants in the program. We have been contacting local groups like
106752506
3 of 13
MA Medical Device Manufacturer’s Assoc., Env. Business Council of NE,
Mass Bio ….We have also contacted local business schools (Entrepreneurial
Div.) to see if any of their students might be interested in this forum. Suffolk is
having a meeting this week to determine whether they have interested
students. Mukund has been working with TIE India. Jennifer has been busy
working with C&EN and the Dec. 23 2013 issue contains a writeup on the
ACS forum. This issue has just come out and we have already received 7
people who are interested in participating. Jennifer has been working with the
ACS Office of Public Affairs to send out a press release on this
Entrepreneurial Forum. We are providing most of the support for the program.
We want this program to be a success so that it will continue to be funded by
the ACS.
 SE MA Group meeting-The first meeting at UMA Dartmouth last October
was a success with more than 80 people in attendance. We are planning a
second meeting this Spring. We would like to have the meeting at Wood’s
Hole Oceanographic (WHOI). There are more than 1,000 scientists at WHOI
and another 250 at the Marine Biological Laboratory. I have written a letter to
the President of WHOI.
 YCC- I met with George Moker head of the Entrepreneurship Program at
Suffolk. Entrepreneurship is the fastest growing program at the University with
more than 400 students. George has offered to teach a workshop on
Entrepreneurship. This might be useful for the YCC program for new
graduates.
 STEM Program at Cape Cod Community College March 29,2014- The
Cape Cod council of the Boy Scouts of America, NESACS, ACS
Environmental Div. and Cape Cod Community College will be hosting a
STEM outreach program for Boy and Girl Scouts, K-12 students & parents.
We will invite the ACS high school chemistry clubs to participate in the
outreach hands-on experiment tables. We expect 1,000- 1,500 to attend. I
have invited Astronaut Byron Lictenberg to be our keynote speaker.

Norris Award: D. Lewis
 The James Flack Norris Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Teaching
of Chemistry is presented annually by the Northeastern Section to an
educator
who is both an excellent classroom teacher and whose professional activities
have had a wide-ranging effect on chemical education.
 The Norris Award is one of the oldest national awards of the American
Chemical Society and is presented annually by the Northeastern Section. The
recipient is selected from nominees who have served with special distinction
as teachers of chemistry at any level and whose efforts have had a wideranging effect on chemical education. The award has been given for a wide
variety of achievements: for outstandingly effective textbooks, lecture
demonstrations, or laboratory experiments, for editing the Journal of Chemical
Education, for developing chemical educational materials, or for exploring
new ways to teach laboratory courses in chemistry. Always, and this is of the
utmost importance, the specific achievement must be coupled with dedicated
teaching of chemistry at the graduate, undergraduate, or high school level.
The award consists of a certificate and an honorarium. ($3000 in 2013)
 Nominations for the Norris Award are due April 15. Members of the Board of
Directors are requested to assist the committee in finding suitable nominees.
 The award will be presented at the November NESACS meeting scheduled
for Thursday, November 13. The Brookline Holiday Inn has been reserved for
this date.

Project Seed: C. Schnitzer
 No written report. Patrick Gordon reported that plans are being made for
additional Project Seed Scholars in addition to the two at Stonehill College.
He pointed out that we have very few colleges and universities participating
given the size of our section. Applications are due at the end of January.
Richard’s Award: R. Georgiadis
 No written report
Summerthing: D. Lewis
 NESACS has 60 right field box tickets for the Red Sox-Cincinnati Reds game
on Tuesday, May 6 at 7:10 pm. Tickets will be available at the January
meeting and afterward prepaid by mail from the NESACS secretary. The price
of $45 per ticket includes a $5 donation to the Northeastern Section. Red Sox
ticket pricing for 2014 follows a new system in which game prices vary. This is
the least expensive option above the bleachers, and gives us somewhat
better seats than in the past, in the right field box instead of grandstand.
 The Northeastern section is now a recognized customer of group sales and
receives early notification of ticket availability.
