VOCABULARY:
1. imperceptible (adjective): not clear or obvious
to the senses: To some students, the sound
when the intercom is left on is imperceptible;
others can hear it all too well.
2. ponder (verb): to think: It is good now and
then to ponder the meaning of life.
3. lucid (adjective): clear-headed; not confused:
He was very lucid when he made the decision,
even though many disagreed with him.
4. tumultuous (adjective): violent; greatly agitated
or disturbed: The relationship between Mr. and
Mrs. Walker in “The Devil and Tom Walker”
was tumultuous—and that’s putting it mildly.
5. insuperable (adjective): incapable of being
overcome: The tardy policy is an insuperable
barrier, and there is no way around it.
6. potent (adjective): powerful or effective: The
medicine prescribed was potent and took
immediate effect.
7. lethargy (noun): abnormal drowsiness: Though
everyone feels tired from time to time, he
thought it might be time to see his doctor for the
lethargy he had been feeling lately.
8. proximity (noun): nearness: She sits in close
proximity to her best friend in class, who can
occasionally be a distraction.
9. avert (verb): to turn away; to prevent: The
smooth handling of the tense situation helped to
avert a potential crisis.
10.swoon (verb): faint: The ladies in the
congregation nearly swooned when they say
Reverend Hooper’s black veil.

AFFECT (verb): Did that medication affect you?
EFFECT (noun): What is the effect of that
medication?
A WHILE: a period of time: Let’s sit here for a
while and listen to the band.
AWHILE: for a short time: Let’s wait here for
awhile.
IRREGARDLESS: Do not use. This is not a word.
Use REGARDLESS instead.
LIKE/AS IF: Say: The singers sounded as if they
had not rehearsed. Do not say: The singers sounded
like they had not rehearsed.
ONTO (preposition): The cat leapt gracefully onto
the windowsill.
ON TO (adverb/preposition): Dexter held on to his
dreams.
