The meeting was called to order at 1:05 p.m. Committee members introduced themselves. 2. The minutes were approved from the April 14 meeting. 3. Articles relevant to First –Year Seminar were passed around. The Academic Advising Proposal was also given to all members. 4. Talked about outline and main ideas related to combining and changing Intro and SOAR. A brief overview from last meeting. 5. Discussed the need to recommend that Intro should be mandatory or not. We did not vote on this, but the general feeling was that if we want to make sure that students attend Intro it should be mandatory. 6. A recommendation was discussed to review the name of Intro to College, explore calling it Orientation since most students and parents can identify with what Orientation means. 7. The committee discussed the importance of looking at the fees for Intro if it becomes mandatory. Some ideas include: working this into the base budget and not charging a separate fee for this program. 8. Moved off of the first recommendation concerning Intro and Soar and into a discussion about First Year Seminar possible models. Scott Furlong again mentioned the resources available on the web and through handouts. He encouraged people to look at other models, many members already did this and were able to contribute to the discussion. 9. The remaining time left in the meeting was dedicated to brainstorming goals for the Freshman Seminar. The committee discussed content based, theme based and other variations of Freshman Seminar. Refer to the list of goals sent out by Scott Furlong and attached at the bottom. The committee will refer back to these goals at our next meeting. 10. Meeting adjourned at 2:15 p.m. 11.
