This year’s Celebration will include a keynote address “Texas: The State of Coastal Waters” given by Ross Melinchuk, Deputy Executive Director, Texas Parks & Wildlife, at the Fundraising Dinner at River Place on Friday evening. The winning Migration Celebration photo contest entries will also be on display. A silent auction and gourmet dinner round out the evening’s festivities. Programs on Saturday feature several free hands-on activities for children, as well as birding tours and seminars geared for beginning, intermediate, and advanced birders. Tours will be given by highly qualified naturalists and can be enjoyed by marsh buggy or van. Additional presentations will be offered on identifying dragonflies and butterflies, shore birds and ducks, reptiles, and the spectacular Birds of Prey show by EarthQuest. Sunday’s “Amazing Adventures” involve smaller, focused groups to explore biological relationships at the refuges and in the Brazosport Area. Adventures include Neotropical birding, a herpetology tour, and kayaking Cedar Lake Creek. A guided tour to the largest Live Oak tree in Texas will also be available. Advanced registration is required for Sunday’s events. Brazosport is located on a major migration flyway. The Migration Celebration is scheduled for the most active period of migration, so expect some great opportunities to see waterbirds, orioles, tanagers, buntings and warblers. The Migration Celebration is a fundraiser sponsored by the Friends of the Brazoria Refuges and all profits go toward educational and conservation programs.
