Communication Difficulties and Talking Mats®
An online training course
This course runs over 12 weeks and includes 4 modules and should take on average 1 hour
per week. Weekly feedback will be provided by the Talking Mats Centre.
The courses run 3 times a year starting in January, April or September
The first 3 modules are designed in three sections and each section aims to be about an
hour long and will have:




An Introduction with some background
A variety of teaching materials for example reading, watching video material
An activity which may be a quiz or an open forum where we ask you to ‘post ideas’.
This means you contribute to a discussion and other group members can see it
A short assignment – this is usually a reflective practice task
The 4th module is an overall evaluation of your ability to use the Talking Mats framework
with a specific set of symbols. It will also include your feedback on this course.
By the end of the course you will:




have increased understanding of communication and communication difficulties
know how to ensure that people with communication difficulties are included in health
interactions
understand the Talking Mats communication framework
be able to use the Talking Mats framework using a set of symbols developed from
the World Health Organisation ICF within your work setting

Cancellation and Changes
Cancellations made between 2 and 4 weeks before the event will be charged 50% of
the total booking fee. Any cancellations less than 2 weeks before the event will be
charged the full amount.
Substitution of delegates is acceptable at any time. In the event of cancellation by
the organisers, liability will be restricted to refund of the fees paid. It may be
necessary for reasons beyond the control of the organisers to make changes to
speakers, content or timing of the programme.
