Teach-In 1960s - 1970s – Honors U.S. History
In this activity, we will attempt to recreate the activist atmosphere of college campuses and high schools
in the late 1960s/early 1970s. Each student will play the role of an activist at a campus teach-in on
"current" social issues. Your group will have the floor of the teach-in for approximately 15 minutes
during the simulation. During this time you should accomplish the following:
- Explain your objection to the status quo - What's been going down?
- Describe your position in relation to other activists [historic figures] on the same issues.
- Make a clear proposal for action with some specific role for students [your audience].
- Make a clear prediction of how you expect the Establishment to respond. What is the
basis for your prediction?
- Use a primary source at some point in your presentation (e.g., effective quote).
- Have a "media friendly" moment. Demonstrate your grasp of political theater.
You should be prepared to respond in character to the presentations of other groups.
Psych everyone out with your authentic dress, language, props, and enthusiasm.
RESEARCH so that you can address the questions above for the teach-in. This means you
need to know the context for why your group wants social change (i.e., define and explain
the problems your group sees in society and wants to redress) as well as your group’s
specific goals, philosophy, key people/groups, key events, tactics, and impact/outcome.
