More than 40 PROSE Awards, including the top prize, the R.R. Hawkins Award, were presented February 4, 2010, at a special Awards Luncheon during the PSP Annual Conference at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. Award winners included Elsevier, Modern Language Association, Oxford University Press, John Wiley & Sons, Louisiana State University Press, and American Physiological Society. A full list of the winners can be found at www.proseawards.com. The 2009 R.R. Hawkins Award was presented to two publishers: The University of Chicago Press for Plato’s Philosophers: The Coherence of the Dialogues, and John Wiley & Sons for Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews (WIREs). While this isn’t the first time the Hawkins has been awarded to two presses since the PSP Awards program launched in 1976, this is the first time an eProduct has taken home the Hawkins prize. “We’re elated with the PSP industry’s enthusiastic response to the PROSE Awards, which has received a record-breaking number of entries for the second year running,” explained PROSE Awards Chairman John A. Jenkins, President & Publisher of CQ Press. “The impact of electronic publishing was tangible from the many types of e-products that were submitted, and the decision to present the 2009 Hawkins Award to both a traditional print product and an electronic product indicates the exciting directions in which our industry is moving.” The prestigious R.R. Hawkins Award recognizes exceptional scholarly works in all disciplines of the arts and sciences, and is given for the most outstanding professional, reference or scholarly work among the year’s award winners. The Award was presented at today’s Awards Luncheon by Daniel Hawkins, son of Reginald Robert Hawkins, the former head of the Science and Technology Division of the New York Public Library and the award’s namesake. This year’s winners were determined by a distinguished panel of 16 PROSE judges: Joseph S. Alpert, University of Arizona; Steve Chapman, McGraw-Hill; Barbara Chen, Modern Language Association; F. Michael Connelly, University of Toronto; Jeff Dean, Wiley-Blackwell; Michael Fisher, Harvard University Press; Nigel Fletcher-Jones, Lexicon Publishing Consultants; James M. Jasper, City University of New York; Myer Kutz, Myer Kutz Associates; Barbara Lange, IEEE; Jean Laponce, Columbia University; George Lobell, Wiley-Blackwell; Helle Mathiasen, University of Arizona; Carol McGall, John Wiley & Sons; John Ryden, Yale University Press; and Henry Tom, Johns Hopkins University Press. The 2009 PROSE Awards received a record-breaking 441 entries – more than ever before in its 34-year history – from more than 60 professional and scholarly publishers across the country. Video highlights from this year’s Awards Luncheon, including the short video PROSE 2009: Publishers…On Publishing and the acceptance speeches of the Hawkins prize winners, will be available on www.proseawards.com and YouTube. About Plato’s Philosophers: The Coherence of the Dialogues by Catherine Zuckert Faced with the difficult task of discerning Plato’s true ideas from the contradictory voices he used to express them, scholars have never fully made sense of the incompatibilities within and between the dialogues. In the magisterial Plato’s Philosophers, Catherine Zuckert explains for the first time how these prose dramas cohere to reveal a comprehensive Platonic understanding of philosophy. To expose this coherence, Zuckert examines the dialogues not in their supposed order of composition but according to the dramatic order in which Plato indicates they took place. This unconventional arrangement lays bare a narrative of the rise, development, and limitations of Socratic philosophy. In the drama’s earliest dialogues, non-Socratic philosophers introduce the political and philosophical problems to which Socrates tries to respond. A second dramatic group shows how Socrates develops his distinctive philosophical style. And, finally, the later dialogues feature interlocutors who reveal his philosophy’s limitations. Despite these limitations, Zuckert concludes, Plato made Socrates the dialogues’ central figure because Socrates raises the fundamental human question: what is the best way to live? At a time when the apparently unbridgeable gap between our understandings of human life and the nonhuman word continues to raise questions, Zuckert’s brilliant interpretation of the entire Platonic corpus offers genuinely new insights into worlds past and present. About Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews (WIREs) The Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews (WIREs) are innovative hybrid publications that combine the most powerful features of online reference works and review journals. The WIREs are published serially in online volumes and issues, making them eligible for abstracting and indexing as well as impact factors; simultaneously, all new content is populated into a meticulously designed thematic outline of the field in question. In this way, the WIREs combine the high visibility of the review journal literature with the editorial structure, comprehensiveness, and authority that are typically associated with scholarly reference works. Furthermore, unlike traditional review journals, the WIREs offer a novel mechanism for updating of previously published articles. Five carefully templated article types (Overviews, Advanced Reviews, Focus Articles, Opinions, and Editorial Commentaries) offer many different access points for readers with varying levels of expertise, and for those in adjacent disciplines. The WIREs platform is the first publishing model of its kind to establish as its central ethos the importance of interdisciplinarity to the scientific enterprise. Researchers in diverse fields have recognized the potential of the WIREs to foster valuable cross-disciplinary collaboration. Wiley has gone to considerable lengths to ensure that its editorial boards reflect appropriate levels of scientific diversity, and that authors prepare their contributions with the needs of readers in different disciplines firmly in mind. The novel editorial features of the WIREs, together with their emphasis on collaboration across disciplinary boundaries, truly represent significant innovations in the scholarly publishing space.
