Nashik district primarily has farm based economy, half of its Blocks have are predominantly tribal population. VACHAN has been involved in various programmes with an aim to make a dent on poverty with an integrated approach. The programmes have been in the realm of Primary Education, Primary Health, Livelihood and Governance. VACHAN started with working in 20 villages and has now reached up to 60 villages. There are studies, which categorically show that now poverty in India is concentrated in specific pockets with associated common parameters. One of the common parameter in most of these pockets is observed to be the fact that these are the tribals living in remote areas. And hence the determination to continue working in such areas with grassroots development programmes gets an edge of urgency. About the people The population is widely spread with most of the villages has less than 400 households. The main village has hamlets and the entire village is spread across the main village and hamlets. The area is hilly like Konkan region and experiences high rainfall. The tribals inhabit the small hillocks. Mahadeo Koli and Thakar are the dominant tribes. The farmers possess small patches of land on the hill slopes, and at the foot of the hills. The plot at the foot of the hill is used to grow Paddy. The slightly higher patch of land is for Khurasani - an oil seed and the higher, very sloppy plots are used in rotation for Ragi - Finger millet. Some of the villages are surrounded by Dam reservoirs of Vaitarna, Alwandi, Mukane rivers. Inspite of this the agriculture is mainly rainfed. Average rainfall of the area is 3000 mm during June-September period. Recently we have worked with slum dwellers of Malegaon mainly migrated population. Our approach VACHAN believes that the development of the poor families can best take place by Reaching out the unreached to ensure participation of the marginalized Encouraging the community to take initiative Encouraging involvement of women in the development process The emphasis on reaching out to the hamlets on priority as they are the most vulnerable Facilitating development of Community Volunteers and fostering those skills that would lead to a sustainable development Complimenting efforts of the government and not duplicate parallel structures / system Dhruv Mankad D:\533576419.doc Page 2 3/7/2016 Our Legal overview: Name of the Organization Postal Address of the Organization Name of Contact person for this purpose Legal status of the organization - Society / Trust registration number - Date of registration - FCRA registration number - Date of registration - 12 A registration number - 80G registration number - Income tax registration number Voluntary Association for Community Health And Nurture (VACHAN) Vasundhara Bunglow, Shivaji Nagar, Near Ambedkar Nagar,Nasik Pune Road, Nasik 422006 Dr Dhruv Mankad/ Shri Mahe Registered Society and Public Trust MAH/3900/95/NSK , F-3730/NSK 15.07.1995, 24.07.1995 083780382 07.05.1987 INS/25858 dated 25/8/1986 Applied for AAATV3051A Programme as evolved over the years VACHAN’s efforts have been to support the community in integrated development with interventions in Primary Health Innovative Education Livelihood (Economic amd Agriculture) Governance (Advocacy) Primary Health A Primary Health Centre for all the villages was the basic infrastructure available. The Nurse could not reach out to all villages since there were no roads and no buses plying to the villages. Reaching out to the hamlets was all the more difficult and hence not being done. Ankur - Home based Newborn Care by the community health workers Along with these programmes VACHAN participated in a social audit study of Infant Mortality. SEARCH, Gadchiroli coordinated this study and designed a programme for home based care for newborn with 6 other organisations across the State. Initially the programme was in the Igatpuri taluka. About 2000 families benefited. VACHAN could reduce neonatal mortality rate from 39 to 23. Now it has been extended into 20 tribal dominant villages in Igatpuri and Trimbak Taluka. It covers 22000 population. 1. Name of Supporting Partner: 2.Project Period: 3.Project Budget : 4. Area covered 5. Lack of awareness about their rights, governance of these rights by the state authorities, procedures and practices (incl malpractices) are reasons for these problems. Vachan carried out several activities to empower the vulnerable groups like farmers, labourers and women about their forest, land, employment guarantee rights. Women were empowered as panchayat members as well as family members. Empowering women against violence: In 1995-2002, about 60 women’s SHG were set up and functioning. This included about 600 families. They used it for family needs. There were 10 thrifting groups of boys and men. They used the loans for livelihood systems. The women SHGs also were empowered as members of a family, society and political system. They participated and led movements against alcohol, for land rights for tribal and for women, employment generation, domestic violence, as members of education committees etc. Domestic violence has been a bane amongst rural and urban communities. The recent law has provided an important tool to fight it out. However, the women suffer from health problems as Dhruv Mankad D:\533576419.doc Page 8 3/7/2016 a direct or indirect outcome of domestic violence. A set of intervention starting from making them aware about negligence both the family and health care provider to health care, about identifying survivors of violence based on the behaviour and symptoms etc. A community based cadre has been developed with the objective to identify and councel the survivors.
