HOW TO FILE COLLEGE APPLICATIONS WITH THE
COUNSELING OFFICE
Private and Out-of-State Colleges
On-Line Applications
1. On-line applications require you to send most of your information electronically.
This includes the biographical information, extra-curricular activity information,
essay, short answer questions, and payment (or fee waiver, if eligible).
2. Please be sure to proof-read all the information before you submit it. Colleges
frequently reject applications that have spelling, grammatical, and even typing
errors!
3. Do not rely on spell-check and grammar-check!
4. Some online applications have an automated application checker to determine if
you omitted any parts or questions on the application. Do not rely on this service
to proofread your application.
5. Print “Teacher Recommendation Forms” and “Counselor or School Reports” and
submit them to the proper individuals.
6. Please submit an ADDRESSED and STAMPED, 9” x 12” or 10” x 13” envelope for
each college, so that we can mail the “school/counselor section,” letter of
recommendation, and any other material to the colleges. Use your high school’s
address as the return address. Write your name underneath the school’s address.
Please visit the Counseling Office if you have any questions.
Paper Applications
(Includes printed copies that were downloaded from the internet.)
1. Applications must be complete when submitted to the Counseling Office.
2. You may submit just the “Secondary School Report/Counselor’s Section” to the
College Office and mail Part I yourself.
3. Submit an ADDRESSED and STAMPED, 9” x 12” or 10” x 13” envelope for each
college. Use your high school’s address address as the return address.

SUNY Application Procedures:


SUNY FEE Waivers: Unlike CUNY applications, many students are
eligible for SUNY fee waivers.
If you need a fee waiver, bring in your family’s 2005 Income Tax forms,
recent pay stubs, or public assistance documents to verify income.
If you apply online, you will need to mail in a separate fee waiver form
signed by your parents and your college advisor.
Students who qualify for EOP (Economic Opportunity Program) may get a
fee waiver to apply to six schools.
Download and print the SUNY fee waiver form:
http://www.suny.edu/Student/downloads/Pdf/AppFeeWaiver_bldg_.pdf
The cost of applying to campus is $40 per school.
1. The Counseling Office will include a copy of your transcript and your
standardized test score (SAT or ACT) for each school to which you apply.
2. The Counseling Office will mail SUNY applications in bulk to the
University Application Center in Albany, NY at 3 p.m. on Monday,
November 13TH.
3. Some SUNY schools require a “Part II” or “Supplemental” application after you
submit the “Part I.”
 You may download the “Part II” or “Supplemental” application from the
SUNY website at: www.SUNY.edu/student and then click “Forms.” Click
the “Supplemental Application Forms” button and choose the schools to
which you have applied.
http://www.suny.edu/Student/apply_supp_apps.cfm
 In the supplemental application, the schools usually require essays, letters
of recommendation, and short answer questions.
 Students should submit “Part II” or “Supplemental” application directly to
the College Office so that we may add the Counselor Section (Secondary
School Report) to the counselor and teacher/mentor letters of
recommendation.
4. It is a good idea to submit your essay and resume to all schools, even if they do
not require these documents.

COMMON APPLICATION
www.commonapp.org
The Common Application is a standardized application that is accepted by hundreds
of colleges. It contains most of the parts and forms of an application from an
individual college. The greatest benefit to using the Common Application is that you
can fill out one application and send it to many colleges that accept it. Check the
website to see which colleges that you want to apply to are “member institutions.”

The “common app” may be completed at their website and may either be
sent electronically or printed as a typed copy and mailed to the colleges.

If you choose to use the Common Application, please be aware that many
colleges have supplemental (additional) questions, essays, and forms to the
Common Application. Check the Common Application website for details.

Do not forget to print out the School Report (Counselor Report), Midyear
Report, and Teacher Evaluation forms and submit them to the proper
individuals. Be sure to fill-out the “student section” of these forms.
