Students read aloud and submit their own poem for contest. Winners will read their poems at Cappuccino Corner on Thursday night at BMHS. BMHS: 1) AVID student read and introduce D.E.A.R. 2) 1st period, 8:15 until 8:35, the entire school will “drop everything and read” for 20 minutes, participating in Florida’s ‘20 Million Minute Marathon’ reading goal 3) Day One of BMHS Book Fair in the Media Center. Selected students will perform “Book Talks” for classes attending the Book Fair. CKS: Continuous Reading 20 minutes during first period K-12 and City Library Sign-Up CES: D.E.A.R. for 20 minutes. WES: School-wide Million Minute Marathon (goal=8,760), begin bookmark contest JBES: TEACHER BOOK CHARACTER DAY: Teachers will dress up as a book character and read their book to kick off the week and get the students excited for literacy week. Million Minute Marathon: Read an extra 20 minutes during the day. WHS: Power Point/Prezi presentation will be provided to teachers containing information regarding Sharon Draper. Announcement of contest and how to get tickets to the Literacy Latte Luncheon on Friday. 1st Period and 6th Period WMS Divergent movie contest kick-off. Students will learn how to qualify to win a field trip to see Divergent on March 21st YTS: Morning Announcements will include Top 10 Reasons to Read (Letterman Style) Tuesday, January 14 BES: Informational Text Day: Students will create and wear vocabulary hats based on vocabulary from Science, Social Studies, and Math. Students will visit their Reading buddies and share hats. BMHS: 1) AVID student reads on announcements. 2) Day Two of BMHS Book Fair in the Media Center. Selected students will perform “Book Talks” for classes attending the Book Fair. CKS: Book Exchange K-12 CES: Visiting readers on campus in various locations Wednesday, January 15 CMHS: Daily announcements on book titles that teachers’ are currently reading. JBES: Reading and Math: Read and graph favorite books or genres. Display it outside your class for other classes to see. WES: “Community Member Read Aloud Day” WHS: Cliff Hangers- Round Robin presentation using a variety of Sharon Draper books available to check out and read. Teachers read certain sections of “designated” books to intrigue students—2nd and 7th period. WMS DEAR Day-all students will read for at least 30 minutes during 1st period. Prize Drawing-all students who make 100% on AR test the week we return from Christmas break will be entered into a drawing to win prizes. YTS: It’s A Mystery---Can you guess the book? Quotes will be given throughout the day for an elementary and middle school age appropriate book. The student who guesses correctly will win the book (if more than one student guesses correctly, then a drawing will be held). BES: Biography Day. Students dress as a famous person teacher/they have read a biography about, guest readers will read short biographies of their successful heroes. BMHS: 1) AVID student read aloud on morning announcements. 2) Day Three of BMHS Book Fair in the Media Center. Selected students will perform “Book Talks” for classes attending the Book Fair. CKS: Door Decoration and Tour: Favorite Class Book K-12 and Guest Readers in Elementary Classes CES: Visiting Readers on campus in various locations CMHS: Media Center will highlight an author and have books available for student check out. JBES: Reading and Writing: Read a book (as a class or individually) and write a letter to another class (or student) about the book. Share your favorite part or tell what you learned from the book and invite them to read the book and respond to your letter. WES: “Running to Read” Early Release Event WHS: Game Day-Vocabulary Scramble. Post 20 words on board. Create groups of 3 students and pass out letters. Explain to students that they will compete against their classmates to create/spell the word you call. Teachers may include having students define or use the word in a sentence. About 20 minutes. 3rd Period WMS: Dodge Ball Tournament-All students who earn 30 AR Pointes between November 21st and January 10th will be able to participate in a Dodge Ball Tournament during 2nd period. YTS: Guest readers on campus to read to our students followed by hot cocoa and graham crackers in the Media Center. Thursday, January 16 Friday, January 17 BES: Fairy Tale/Science Fiction Day. Wear your pajamas to read a bed time fairy tale, create a book marker of favorite book, pick a class winner and submit for contest. Attend Cappuccino corner at BMHS. BMHS: 1) Health Literacy contest on morning announcements. 2) Day Four of BMHS Book Fair in the Media Center. Selected students will perform “Book Talks” for classes attending the Book Fair. Cappuccino corner in the Media Center from 5-7 p.m. hosted by SGA for community members, students and parents. CKS: Storybook Character Parade PreK-5 CES: Visiting Readers on campus in various locations CMHS: AVID students will make book marks to distribute to one CES grade level. JBES: Buddy Reading with Partner Class WES: Send home Parent Suggested Reading list to share with family members WHS: Published Work: Students are given the opportunity to write a poem/short story which will be published in a school magazine for all students to read. 4th period WMS: Book Give Away during Lunch-There will be a drawing for popular books during each lunch period. YTS: I Love to Read book report day: ALL ELA classes will have students produce an oral book report on their all-time favorite book BES: Realistic Fiction/Drama Day. Read a Reader’s Theatre based on a realistic fiction story. Submit entry: Why Reading is Important for Success in Life (students can choose to do a poem, story, expository essay, or poster) BMHS: 1) AVID/SGA student read aloud on morning announcements 2) Day Five of BMHS Book Fair in the Media Center. CKS: Guest storyteller and January Shark Book Challenge/Principal Make-Over CES: K-2 Character Dress Up, 3-5 Vocabulary Dress Up (Wear your word), Vocabulary Parade CMHS: Visiting community members will read to ELA Classes. JBES: “Read Around the School” – Community volunteers will come and read to classes. Guest storyteller Jenny Rodgers will visit and share the love of reading and magic. WES: Reader’s Tea with Reading Coach for winners of the bookmark contest. WHS: Drop Everything and Read: All teachers share their personal favorite book—perhaps read a section of it or just share why it is their favorite. All students will read silently for 20 minutes. Literary Latte Day: Students who have been nominated are invited to attend the Literary Latte to share their writing or read an excerpt of their work. WMS: Literary Character Dress Up Day-The three best student literary character costumes will win a ticket to see the Divergent Movie in March and the best dressed teacher will receive a gift card to Barnes and Noble. YTS: Book Buffett (grades 2-8): ELA (science and math in middle school will “adapt” this to fit their curriculum) teachers will place a book on each child’s desk. When the teacher says, “Go,” the student will read the book for 5 minutes. At the end of the five minutes, have the student “turn and talk” to the student next to him/her about what they just read. No more than 3 minutes on the “turn and talk.” Exchange books so everyone has a new book. Repeat. ELEMENTARY (k-1): Classes will all vote on their favorite book. All classes will receive a cereal box to decorate as their favorite book. The decorated boxes will go on display in the library for all to see. (Cereal boxes to be provided) ALL WEEK---- MOST AR points in a week competition: The TOP 3 classes with the most points (any grade level) will receive ice cream sandwiches
