September 13, 2012 For Immediate Release Media Contact: Mayor Pro Tem Naggar (951) 506-5100 RE: CITY OF TEMECULA MAYOR PRO TEM MIKE NAGGAR APPOINTED TO REGIONAL CENTER BOARD OF TRUSTEES On September 10, 2012, the Inland Regional Center (IRC) appointed City of Temecula Mayor Pro Tem Mike Naggar to the Board of Trustees. The IRC is a nonprofit, private community-based agency that provides support to over 25,000 individuals with development disabilities in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. The IRC is the largest of the twenty-one (21) regional centers in the State of California and is under contract with the California Department of Developmental Services. The IRC has been providing services in the Inland Empire since 1972. The City of Temecula has emerged a regional leader in raising the awareness of the special needs community and providing specialized education and training for the residents of this region. An example of this leadership is the creation of the Regional Autism Task Force. This effort brought together elected officials from Riverside County and cities within southwest Riverside County. Successful programs born from this effort include: the development of a Special Needs Resource Guide for the region that can be accessed at www.cityoftemecula.org, draft of the Autism Playbook (a guide for local governments to address special challenges within their community). Additional programs designed and implemented to assist the special needs community include: Community educational forums that raise awareness Parent/caregiver educational forums and support Recreational and enrichment programs Inclusive training opportunities for City employees/volunteers Special Games Inclusive employment/internship opportunities Building new and existing partnerships with the County of Riverside and non-profit agencies The appointment of Mayor Pro Tem Naggar will assure that the southwest riverside communities will be well represented on this important regional board.
